A Norwegian columnist heckled Modi in Oslo last week, demanding he take questions from "the freest press in the world."
The phrase defeats itself on inspection - none of its three words survive a basic audit.
On "Free":
- Her paper Dagsavisen is owned by Christian missionary groups - including Normisjon, descendant of the body that ran proselytisation schools among India's Santhal tribes for 134 years.
- It survives on a massive annual state subsidy from the Norwegian government. Without the dole, the paper wouldn't be able to survive.
On "Freest":
- The World Press Freedom Index is a subjective survey of ~150 self-selected Western correspondents per country.
- No audit of ownership, subsidy capture, or commercial bias.
The press that calls itself the freest does not survive an honest look at itself.

Thailand chose Lord Hanuman as the official mascot of the Asian Athletics Championships that it hosted. "Lord Hanuman exhibits strength, courage and wisdom," said the official communique.
If India had done this for a sports event, we'd have been declared a fascist Hindu Rashtra.
@XiJinpingi@ARanganathan72@realDonaldTrump I am hoping that Modi wins the Nobel prize instead. Wonder what Trump will do. I bet that he will start sobbing in public. Or out of spite, he will just start 4-5 wars around the world. I fear the latter is more plausible.
@mediocregandhi Of course, not nani's house. Scaling Mt. Everest with your baby strapped on is the best 😬. Beach is the best place for babies. Of course, they will try to drink up the whole ocean.
France is burning. 5 days of loot, arson and rioting. Testing Macron's authority & politics. He was supposed to unite Europe, now his own country is divided and up in flames.
Reports say there will be an internet shutdown. Thank god it's France. Had it happened in the "third world," they would've called it a human rights violation. In France, it's a "preventive measure."
The BBC has been expelled from India twice. On both occasions, the Congress was in power.
In 1942, it reported on the INA’s activities. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose called it the “Bluff and Bluster Corporation.” His Hindi newspaper translated it as “बेहूदा और बकवास कॉरपोरेशन”
@vasanvs @ZavierIndia No surprise there. Ansari is a disgrace. Another one is Pratibha Patil, that especially hurts considering she succeeded Kalamji - the best ever President of India.
Obama in a speech to Africans in 2013: "If everyone in Africa wants a car, air conditioner, and a big home... the world will boil over!"
This is called Climate Change Imperialism. In other words, only developed countries can have nice things.
“India is the BEST place for Minorities. Minorities have actually more rights in India, than the majority. If the Hindus are the majority, hindus have less rights. Minorities get special treatment, they get more privileges...”, @AbhijitChavda
