I was laid out for 2 weeks with horrendous back pain.
I made it to Emergency on a powerful dose of painkillers at my Doctor's recommendation. They gave me a dose of better painkiller - Demerol - which did give relief as I left the hospital and took a cab ride home. But it only lasted until I tried to lift my leg for the front step at which point the pain cut through the Demerol and put me on the ground.

After another week someone from work gave me the name of a Massage Therapist. I doubted it, but tried it anyway. She had me walking pain free in an hour.
Apparently it was only a muscle spasm in my back that caused the incredible pain.

I suspect that most debilitating back pain is caused by muscle spasms, but our medical system usually assumes a pinched nerve or slipped disk, resulting in surgery.
I've never needed additional medical treatment
