Thank you for your call, Mr. President-Elect.
I’m looking forward to working with you to get financial relief directly to the people, beat COVID-19, and build a healthier, more prosperous, more just America for all.
The fires across the West Coast are just the latest examples of the very real ways our changing climate is changing our communities. Protecting our planet is on the ballot. Vote like your life depends on it—because it does.
I’ve spent the afternoon watching videos of the Obama White House. How fun was it ? How humble were they? How much appeal to the regular person did they have ? The definition of you don’t know what you have till it’s gone. America please vote this year.
A6: This poem is hopeful because it exposes the humanity in prisoners that is often ignored. Its insight into who these prisoners are beyond their crimes creates a relatability and a sense of societal unity as we connect with them on universal topics like family.

A5: The metaphor suggests that rigid definitions prevent us from exploring what we can become. By illustrating how barbed wire (associated with entrapment) can be reinvented in innocent forms like monkey bars and kids bikes, Clint deconstructs these rigid definitions.

A4: Using individual names adds humanity to the poem that contrasts the prior more industrial descriptions of barbed wire & concrete walls. The tone becomes more empathetic so readers can connect to the emotion of prisoners who are often stripped of their identity.

A2: The imagery of the chain linked fence stands out to me. Smith’s characterization that fences do “only what they have convinced themselves they have been built for” parallels how stereotypes can hold people back from recognizing their true self.

A3: The poet is suggesting the unpredictability of identity. Often times we have a very rigid idea of who we are or who we think others are, but Smith encourages us to look beyond these definitions.

A1: The title “Beyond This Place” suggest that Clint Smith will deconstruct society’s traditional definition and association of a location. “Beyond” implies moving forward so the the title indicates a positive redefinition.

WU: My favorite poem in Counting Descent is “Ode to the Only Black Kid in the Class.” I liked the way that it illuminates hidden injustice and deconstructs stereotypes that are prevalent in everyday life.
