One year since this audacity.

The victim is bedridden, disoriented, and surviving solely on support, fed through a Ryles tube and requiring round-the-clock nursing and specialized care just to stay alive.. As a family of four with only one earner, they’ve exhausted their savings and borrowed heavily to cover monthly medical bills running into lakhs. They are now crowdfunding, having received no support from the accused’s family.

Meanwhile, the accused is out on bail. The case drags on with long adjournments, and according to a post in r/jammu, the High Court has interim-stayed proceedings under Section 109 (attempt to murder), though I couldn't independently verify this.

What should have been an open-and-shut case will be dragged out for years. Once public memory fades and the family loses the spirit to fight, which they already have, the accused will walk away without consequences.

I learned about the Indian caste system, after I got to know what reservation is.

This is a personal story.

In 12 years of my schooling, my parents always taught me to treat everyone with equal respect, with no discrimination.

In Standard 12th, while filling the IIT-JEE form, I asked my dad about the category section. He told me to tick general. I didn't even know which category of caste I was in. That was the extent of my knowledge on the Indian caste system then.

I got a good AIR, and I secured my admission in IIT Madras in Mechanical Engineering. Upon reaching the college, we were allotted our rooms. The room was double occupancy, so I got a roommate. I won't tell his name, because people find caste in names.

The very first exam we had was in a Mathematics course. I passed with flying colors, but he failed. In the evening when I saw him, I asked him to show me his paper. Even some basic differential equation and number systems questions, he had answered wrong.

I was honestly surprised. I asked him, bro, how can you get these wrong. These type of questions, we even had in our JEE paper. He just deflected my question. But, in a few days time, I sensed something was wrong. Because he failed even the Engineering Physics exam (which also had many JEE level questions).

Out of concern, one day I asked him, why is he failing these basic exams. 60-70% were JEE level questions. He should be able to at least answer that. And then he told me his JEE marks on which he secured the admission. I was surprised, and taken aback.

You see, those days, cut off marks was not declared publicly.

And when he told me his marks, there was a significant difference. My first reaction was that it's not fair. Why is he allowed to come to IIT Madras on his low marks while I studied way harder to secure my seat. My second reaction was disappointment when he told me his dad was a IPS officer, and he too secured it basis reservation.

I will be honest. I actually did not speak to him for a few days. But after 7-8 days, I told him that it's very disrespectful to what he is doing with the opportunity he has got. He should focus on studying and not waste it. Imagine a student who got in even though he was complacent with his studies. He even had a fair starting line, resource and money to prepare for the exam (unlike poor students). Honestly, once his dad availed the benefit, he shouldn't have. But, he did. Nothing against him. He didn't do anything illegal. But it's a flaw in the system.

After some time, we became good friends. I constantly tried to help him in studies, but he couldn't grasp many things. Some other seniors also tried to help him with how and what to study, but it didn't help him either. He got a year back, then another year back and then he dropped out.

I realized how reservation has both merits and demerits.

On one hand, it allows the underprivileged students to get a fair starting line. That's affirmative action. I believe that is required. But, along with that, some preparatory courses are also required. Reservations don't apply to college internal exams. What's the point of affirmative action if a person can't cope up with the internal exams?

On the other hand, I realized how many students, even if they had a fair starting line, utilize reservation to get into prestigious colleges, with much lesser hard work. Honestly, they don't deserve that seat. That seat belongs to a meritorious student. If one person has availed reservation, and uplifted himself or herself, reservation to his/her next generation should cease to exist.

And that's why I believe in the below three:-

1. One Nation, One Cutoff
2. One Generation, One Reservation
3. Fair Exams. Fair Starting Line

If the concept of reservation is tweaked with the above ethos, it will ensure both the things - fairness to all students, and affirmative action where it is required due to limited access to resources and opportunities.

I have been riding petrol & diesel vehicles in India for over 22 years now.

I used to calculate mileage of my bike & car by dividing distance travelled by the total fuel filled between 2 refills. We used to get actual data based on the real conditions like Roads (Road Tax paid), Traffic, Climate & Shifting of Gears etc.

I must confess, until Gadkari ji told in an interview, I never knew that there is some machine in authorised service centres which will calculate our mileage 😭😭🥺 And we should only depend on that 😭😭😭😭😭

Have we been calculating our mileage wrongly our entire life? 🤡

An Indian scientist at Harvard discovered ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). Then he helped create the first chemotherapy drug and the first tetracycline antibiotic. Harvard still refused him tenure. A bowling alley would not let him bowl. He died at 53, without an obituary.

His medicines save tens of millions of lives every year. Most American doctors who prescribe them have no idea what his name was. His name was Yellapragada Subbarow (Subba Rao).

He was born in 1895 in Bhimavaram, India. His father was a Sanskrit scholar who died from tropical sprue. Tropical sprue is an acquired malabsorptive disorder found in tropical regions, characterized by chronic diarrhea, weight loss, and severe nutritional deficiencies. It is most commonly associated with deficiencies in vitamin B12 and folic acid, resulting in anemia, fatigue, and glossitis. The same disease killed two of his brothers. As a child, Subbarow watched them fade away and decided he would spend his life fighting disease.

He failed his school exams twice. Passed on the third attempt. His future father-in-law paid for his medical school books. Subbarow married his daughter and repaid the debt. In October 1922, he arrived in Boston with borrowed money and broken English. He was 27. He entered Harvard Medical School and joined the biochemistry PhD program.

He began working under a senior researcher named Cyrus Fiske. Long hours. Little pay. But he was at Harvard, and he did not care. In 1925, they developed the Fiske-SubbaRow assay, a method for measuring phosphorus in body fluids. It is still used today in kidney failure testing, vitamin D testing, and prostate cancer work. It became one of the most cited methods in biochemistry history.

Then they found something even bigger in 1926 - ATP - Adenosine triphosphate. The energy molecule that powers every cell in every living thing on Earth. That discovery changed biochemistry. It also proved that the 1922 Nobel laureate had been wrong about how muscles worked. Muscles did not run on glycogen. They ran on ATP.

Subbarow earned his PhD in 1930. He stayed at Harvard for another decade. Paper after paper. Discovery after discovery. And every year, Harvard refused to promote him. The biochemistry department had never given tenure to a foreigner. They were not going to begin with an Indian.

His colleagues took him fishing. Played tennis with him. Came to dinner at his home. Then voted against him year after year. Outside the laboratory, he met the same wall. He bought an airplane and learned to fly because he loved flying. Once, he tried to go bowling. The local alley refused him entry. The sign said it was “open only to the Caucasian race.”

Then Fiske turned against him. The senior researcher began blocking Subbarow’s discoveries out of jealousy. Some of Subbarow’s work had to be rediscovered years later by other scientists because Fiske kept his findings hidden.

May 1940. Harvard denied him tenure for the last time. After 17 years of groundbreaking work, he walked away. Lederle Laboratories in New York hired him as Associate Director of Research. By the end of the year, he was Director. In the next eight years, he changed medicine. He developed diethylcarbamazine, an oral medicine that killed the tropical worms crippling American soldiers in the Pacific. The World Health Organization still uses it.

He isolated folic acid from liver and worked out how to produce it on a large scale. Today, folic acid in pregnancy prevents birth defects in tens of millions of pregnancies every year. The same family of diseases that killed his father and brothers became preventable because of him.

Then Dr. Sidney Farber called from Boston with an idea: maybe a drug that blocked folic acid in cancer cells could kill childhood leukemia. Subbarow’s team created the drug. They called it Aminopterin. In December 1947, Farber gave it to an eight-year-old boy dying from leukemia. Within weeks, the cancer cells began to disappear.

It was the first chemotherapy drug in history. The first time anyone had put cancer into remission using a pill. Subbarow’s team later refined it into Amethopterin, now known as methotrexate. It became a gold standard treatment for leukemia, lymphoma, breast cancer, and lung cancer. Then rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and Crohn’s disease. The World Health Organization lists it as an essential medicine. Tens of millions of people use it every year.

In 1948, his lab produced Aureomycin. The first tetracycline antibiotic - a broad-spectrum one that killed typhus, cholera, pneumonia, and many bacteria that penicillin could not touch. It opened the door to the whole tetracycline family: doxycycline, minocycline, and drugs still used today against plague, malaria, anthrax, and drug-resistant infections.

He was 53 years old. He had created medicines that would save tens of millions of lives. August 8, 1948. Yellapragada Subbarow suffered a heart attack at his home in New York and died. No American newspaper gave him a front-page obituary. No university held a memorial. The Nobel Committee never honoured him. His own colleague George Hitchings later won a 1988 Nobel Prize for work built directly on Subbarow’s foundation. Subbarow was not even nominated.

In 1950, Argosy magazine published a feature about him titled “Miracle Man of the Miracle Drugs.” It began with a line that still hits hard. “You’ve probably never heard of Dr. Yellapragada Subbarow. Yet because he lived, you may be alive and are well today. Because he lived, you may live longer.”

Most Americans had not heard of him in 1950. Most still have not. Harvard has never officially honoured him. American medical schools mostly do not teach his name. The Nobel Committee that honoured Hitchings for work built on his foundation never corrected the record. Every methotrexate prescription written today remains silent about the man behind it.

India remembers. The government issued a postage stamp for his 100th birthday. His childhood home became a museum. Indian medical schools teach his name. But the country that denied him tenure, refused to let him bowl, and allowed him to die unknown - the same country that uses his drugs every day - still mostly does not know him.

Here is the truth. If someone you know has ever taken methotrexate for cancer or an autoimmune disease. If someone you love has taken folic acid during pregnancy. If you have ever been prescribed doxycycline for an infection. That was him. Yellapragada Subbarow. Born 1895. Died 1948. Saved tens of millions of lives, while a country he loved barely knows what it owes him.

Please remember his name and let your near and dear know about this little-known scientific legend born on this soil but never got the true recognition that he deserved. A story you need to know. A story all of us need to know. #Medicine #Unknownlegends @centerofright @KiranKS

In 3 decades of Govt Service, I have been assaulted around 15 times on duty, just like the drs in the video are. Every single time, I have given a complaint to the Dean,RMO & the local Inspector of Police in writing. How many goons hv been prosecuted- ZERO.

Why was this politician atleast arrested? Coz, the incident was caught on CCTV and the victim was both a female & Dalit Dr. Does anyone talk abt the male Dr, who was also assaulted? No.

Violence to settle things is the norm , rather than the exception in India- one of the most primitive/brutal societies in the world. Believe me, every single day there is an assault on a Tamilnadu Govt Dr, posted in this or that WhatsApp grp. How many r prosecuted? To my knowledge, none.
Once I was assaulted with bleeding injuries on duty at a local GH, walked up to the police outpost and with blood dripping from my body on the complaint paper, gave a written complaint addressed to the Police Inspector. Later, the case also came to court. Nurses & wardboys testified as witnesses. I identified the assailants & weapons in court.
The judge who sat in the case was an honest upright lady. I was then treating her father. I cd see that she was determined that justice be delivered. What happened? Ultimately the case was dismissed. The honest Inspector later met me & was fuming. "Sir, what can I do? In TN, everything is politicised. Our (honest) DC has received calls from 3 ministers. The APP has received 'calls'. All the witnesses who testified for u, later turned hostile. Their families have been threatened with death. Sometimes, I feel like resigning sir. There is no justice in Tamilnadu." Remember that was an Inspector of Police speaking.
If you are a medical student/intern/ resident, get your degrees & get the f*** out of this thankless country. I have a hundred more incidents to relate.

A daycare employee at Capgemini's Bengaluru campus couldn't bear the abuse of the kids at the centre.

She reported it to supervisor, but instead of taking action, they fired her. She then became a whistleblower and leaked videos that exposed the abuse.

In the videos, toddlers were made to sit inside the drum of a front-loading washing machine, had water sprayed into their mouths using a toilet jet spray, were locked inside bathrooms, and were forced into narrow, water-filled pipes to frighten them. The videos triggered outrage, forcing authorities to act.

Today, according to media reports, the police have arrested the whistleblower only for allegedly "leaking sensitive videos." Lol! What a system! A poor woman with a clear conscience stood up to the powerful and went public, not for personal gain or with any malicious intent, but solely to protect those children. And she's the one who gets arrested.
