Gael Monfils shares 3 lessons he learned from Elina Svitolina:
“Three lessons from my wife Elina.”
“When I started this blog, I said that I’d try not to be a giver of lessons. But I’m definitely a taker of lessons. I think part of what’s gotten me to where I am is the belief that everyone has something to teach me, so I want to share some of the things I’ve picked up from people I know or just admire, which in the case of my wife Elina checks both those boxes. 😉”
1. There’s so much value in taking a stance.
“It’s tempting to always take the middle ground & stay neutral, not risk offending anyone. And in many cases, that can be the wise thing to do. But sometimes, when it really matters to you, taking a strong position is the most powerful thing you can do, if only for yourself. Standing firm for what you believe definitely opens you up to criticism, but in the end, it gives you a sense of integrity & alignment with oneself. That’s a lesson in courage that I admire so much.”
2. Separate your struggles from your self.
“From motherhood, to our respective comebacks, to the pressures of public life, to her deeply personal connection to the situation in Ukraine, Elina’s shown me the art of compartmentalizing without over-identifying. Her ability to keep a clear head in the chaos is amazing. One way I try to apply this to my own life is by not taking anything personally. If someone criticizes my game, or writes something rude about me online, I remind myself it’s not about me. It’s so simple, but it helps take the sting out of a stressful situation.”
3. Responsibility can be as rewarding as it is risky
“Especially during my long recovery & in the first year of life with our daughter, Elina showed me that ‘slowing down’ does not mean ‘skipping.’ I realized that when you do a task with enough attention, even the most boring things, such as household chores, become enjoyable. As a player, husband & father, I have come to the conclusion that being responsible is not only important, but also very cool 😃.”
Learning & loving. 🥹

DEVON CONWAY - One of the worlds 🌍 best batsman today…👏🏻💪🏻🏏 So happy for him!!…as he has come a long way…
Contrary to many’s “lack on knowledge” on DC’s development, DC played a lot of local cricket in SA after leaving @stjohnscollege - and in fact he played at the @LionsCricketSA as a young boy when I was there as the Head Coach, before he was signed by Graham Forde at the @DolphinsCricket - DC was a prolific run scorer especially at amateur level, but perhaps underperformed a touch in the A Section - and is maybe why many claim that the @ProteasMenCSA “missed and ignored him”…when in actual fact DC just wasn’t near where he is brilliantly today.
It wasn’t too much longer after him leaving the #Dolphins when I bumped into DC in 🇬🇧 and got him to play 2nd XI #Cricket for @SomersetCCC when I was there as the Dir. of Cricket, as he was playing Club Cricket for and doing well for @tauntondeanecc - DC did really well for the 2nd’s and also his local club.
DC was a determined young man and WANTED 💪🏻 to make it as he loved his cricket - but he was in a bit of a ‘transition phase’ in my mind - and had options of go back to SA (without being given a contract), staying in the UK for years to try to qualify (with only a Club Contract), or to go to NZ to further his cricket (with nothing other than potentially a Club Contract in Wellington)… We all knew DC was quality and it was just a matter of time…👌🏻🏏
History shows that @Devon_conway99 made a great decision to go down under 🇳🇿 which was clearly the perfect environment for him. It was meant to be!! DC was clearly a ‘late developer’ for sure, but is now at 32 in his absolute PRIME!! I think he felt loved in #NewZealand and had a good support structure cricket wise - but I have no doubts that it was TOUGH in terms of fighting to just survive and to play cricket in the early parts… This is a great lesson for many youngsters who have a ‘dream’ - that total #perserverance can pay off…👏🏻🏏
I’m extremely PROUD of and very HAPPPY for DC - he had the talent, he believed in himself, he was patient enough to wait for his prime whilst his mates were all probably earning big money in corporate etc., and he just stuck to what he loved and knew best! HERE we are today with him probably being one of the best @BLACKCAPS players in the world working under colleague and friend #GaryStead the NZ Head Coach…!
Onwards DC, looking forward to seeing how this @cricketworldcup #CricketWorldCup2023 works out for you… 👏🏻🙏🏻🏏

Ben Stokes is a great example of how stats don’t tell the full story. His numbers aren’t comparable to the great all rounders, but all of us privileged to see him play know he’s one of the best in the business.
How he turns up time and again in big situations I’ll never know
