Update: I'm not posting here anymore, unwilling to spend time dredging the algorithm’s stuff. Please find me at the blue place where I'm @ssataline.bsky.social.
He cited Beijing’s repeated interpretations on legal issues, dictated outcomes to judges, threats by liaison office, denials of new political parties. https://t.co/7My543pxXF
@ayhcheung was a academic and #HongKonger who noted amid the Umbrella Movement - yrs before #NSL - how his hometown weaponized bureaucracy and law to attack critics and rivals.

Cheung showed how HK became a “dual state”, abiding by common law to ensure prosperity, but heaped bureaucracy onto democracy parties, activists. Authoritarians maintain rule of law, as they undermine it for some. https://t.co/7My543pxXF
Cheung showed how HK adopted a “dual state” mode, abiding by common law to ensure prosperity, but heaped bureaucracy onto democracy parties, activists, critics. Thus, authoritarians maintain rule of law, as they undermine it for some. Think India, Turkey, Venezuela, Hungary etc
Due process, fairness another victim of #StandNews trial, as officials used verbal threats, a newsroom raid, bail denials, an elongated trial + evidence similar to work long published. A process, many said, to make published criticism look illegal.

Left to feed on its own info, #AI model can become “poisoned with its own projection of reality.” Much like humans. Read widely! https://t.co/da82rymPod via @NYTimes
More per @AFP: the prelim investigation focuses on Telegram's “potential exploitation by criminal entities,” “Durov's alleged failure to implement effective measures to prevent illegal activities on the platform.” https://t.co/PjjyitywL4
Still not clear from this French article if France issued orders to #Telegram or #PavelDurov to remove material abt drug trafficking, terrorism, cyberstalking. If not, this is like arresting a news publisher or @CraigsList for content of classified ads. https://t.co/rfg22SyhU9
We are overjoyed to have Alsu back with us. She has done nothing wrong and was unjustly imprisoned by the Russian government simply for being an American citizen and a journalist for RFE/RL. In the free world, she stands as a hero.
Our work is far from over. There are still many political prisoners held unjustly by repressive regimes. Among them are RFE/RL journalists Vladyslav Yesypenko, detained in Russia-occupied Crimea on March 10, 2021; Ihar Losik, detained in Minsk, Belarus, on June 25, 2020; and Andrey Kuznechyk, detained in Minsk, Belarus, on November 25, 2021. We will continue to work tirelessly to secure their freedom.

He noted the small ways that HK suppressed opposition parties, depriving members of free speech. As China’s new security law metastasized, Alvin noted Beijing seemed “willing to define virtually any dissent as endangering national security.” That in 2017.
Long before the extradition bill, National Security Law, new Article 23, 3000 convictions, @ayhcheung noted that Beijing was squeezing #HongKong through the courts to degrade civil rights and elections. His death is a stunning, irreplaceable loss.

Like this: China’s adoption of “national security” “gives almost unlimited scope for interpretation and for state intervention. …It will likely result in the further concentration of power in the National Security Commission headed by Xi Jinping. (2015) https://t.co/fMHcZKS6Sm
God bless @evanscribe.
"We need a journalism that's a countervailing force to our image-driven media," Wright declares. "I try to overthrow a dominant idea about my subject with every story. We print people need to attack the Matrix."
