Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned the passing of His Highness Oyo, the King of Tooro, describing his untimely death as a profound loss to the Kingdom of Tooro, Uganda and the region.

In a message to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the former President extended his condolences to President Museveni, Mama Janet, the Royal Family of Tooro and the people of Uganda.

President Kenyatta eulogised King Oyo for his vision, leadership and commitment to working with both Central and Local Governments to advance the development and wellbeing of his people.

He noted that the late King’s passing leaves a void that will be felt for generations, while expressing solidarity with President Museveni and the Royal Family during this difficult period of mourning.

May the soul of His Highness Oyo rest in eternal peace.

Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom Pays Last Respect to King Oyo

Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom has paid its last respects to the fallen King of Tooro, Ikingura Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at Karuziika Royal Palace in Fort Portal.

Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom delegation was headed by the Prime Minister, Owek. Andrew Byakutaga Ateenyi, and the Chairperson of the Royal Commission, Omujwarakondo Dr. Kabagambe Kaliisa Ateenyi.

They were accompanied by the Head of Royal Regalia, Owek. George Muhuruzi Akiiki; Assistant Batebe, Kabatalya; Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS), Alex Katusabe Abooki; Production and Tourism Officer, Omuny. Atuha Moses Amooti; and other kingdom officials.

The delegation was warmly received by the Prime Minister of Tooro Kingdom, Owek. Calvin Armstrong Rwomire Akiiki.

The Bunyoro-Kitara Prime Minister and the Chairperson of the Royal Commission signed the condolence book before they were led to pay their last respects to the late Ikingura Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

After paying their respects, Prime Minister Owek. Andrew Byakutaga Ateenyi addressed hundreds of mourners gathered at Karuziika Royal Palace, conveying the heartfelt condolences of RA Omukama Dr. Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I, Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom and the people of Bunyoro-Kitara to the Royal Family and the people of Tooro Kingdom.

The Prime Minister extended condolences to the Queen Mother of Tooro Kingdom, Best Kemigisa; the Batebe, Ruth Komuntale; the Prime Minister, Omujwera Musuga; the entire Tooro Kingdom Cabinet; and the people of Tooro.

Owek. Byakutaga emphasized the deep historical and cultural bond between Bunyoro-Kitara and Tooro, describing the two kingdoms as people of one heritage and one flesh.

“Tooro and Bunyoro-Kitara are one people, born of the same flesh. What happens in Tooro touches our hearts deeply,” he said.

The Prime Minister commended the Queen Mother, @QueenOlimi Kemigisa, for raising a King who, throughout his reign, became a pillar of Tooro Kingdom and whose influence extended beyond the borders of the kingdom and Uganda.

He described Ikingura Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV as a peacemaker, unifier, cultural and tourism ambassador, and a leader committed to the wellbeing and development of his people.

Owek. Byakutaga recalled that the late King maintained a strong relationship with his caretaker, His Majesty Omukama Dr. Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I, and regularly paid courtesy visits to the Omukama.

He further highlighted the late King's commitment to transforming the lives of his people through initiatives in agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), skilling, education, culture and tourism.

The Prime Minister called upon the people of Tooro to remain united, peaceful and loving during the difficult period of mourning, as the kingdom grieves the loss of a cherished and respected King.

As a gesture of solidarity and support, Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom also delivered nine (9) cows to support Tooro Kingdom in preparations for the burial of Ikingura Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

The gesture underscores the enduring brotherhood, cultural ties and solidarity between the two great kingdoms of Bunyoro-Kitara and Tooro during this difficult moment.

Clarification: The UPDF Has Not Withdrawn Tooro Royal Guards

Reference is made to the statement attributed to the Queen Mother of Tooro, Her Majesty Best Kemigisa dated September 10, 2026.

This is to clarify that the UPDF has NOT withdrawn the Tooro Royal Guards from the palace as alleged. Certainly, it is also not true that the residents of the Royal Palace are under lockdown or house arrest as suggested.

In essence, the UPDF is not privy to or involved in the succession processes currently ongoing in the Tooro Kingdom.

Nonetheless, on account of the magnitude of the ongoing event, the big number of people gathered, and proximity to security threats emanating from eastern DRC, the UPDF leadership decided to reinforce the Royal Guards with additional security for the palace and the surrounding areas. Movements are being closely monitored, with access control measures such as thorough search and checks introduced to ensure everyone’s safety.

Furthermore, the Commander Land Forces (CLF), Lt General Kayanja Muhanga visited the palace to pay his last respects to the fallen King, and to inspect progress of UPDF projects at the Royal Tombs, the roads leading up to them, and other rehabilitation works. The CLF is satisfied that the UPDF Engineering Brigade has made excellent progress in executing the assigned works, he is confident they will be ready for the official burial of the King.

The UPDF commiserates with the Queen Mother upon the untimely demise of her son and King. We also extend our deepest sympathies to the Royal Family, the Kingdom of Tooro, and all the people of Uganda and the region for the tragic loss of our beloved King.

The UPDF, working with other security forces, remains available to extend all the required support to guarantee security, calm, and the safety of mourners during this period of grief.

When all this is over, we shall need to have a serious conversation about the relevance of traditional kingdoms in the modern Republic of Uganda, and whether their continued existence and financing are justified when they are sustained, in part, at the expense of the public.
