The following 7 documentaries have shaped my thinking and changed my behavior over the last several years. I revisit them often.
1. Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain. I deeply appreciated the nuanced portrayal. The archival and outtake footage alone make it well worth watching. Tony’s story is inspiring, incredible, and tragic, and this film does an admirable job of capturing all three.
2. Searching for Sugar Man. I’ve had dozens of friends recommend this over the years. It’s SPECTACULAR. The film’s accolades include 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, a BAFTA Award for Best Documentary, and an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, just to mention a few.
3. Bird by Bird with Annie. I’ve loved @ANNELAMOTT and her work for more than a decade, and ever since I had her on the podcast, I’ve gone even deeper into the Annieverse. This documentary had just the right blend of humor, humanity, and insight to help me with some difficult emotions this week.
4. Sour Grapes. This film scores ~95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and both the story and its cinematic telling are simply fantastic. This is a hilarious and nearly unbelievable case study in factors that make humans vulnerable to deceit, hubris, and more.
Intelligent people live a boring life. They go to bed at 10. Wake up at 6. Eat simple foods. Go for long walks. Read thick books. Say no to things that drain them. The world chases excitement. But they chase calm. Things that align with their soul. A calm routine. A quiet mind. A healthy body. Meaningful work. A small circle. A private life. Their life may look boring from the outside. But from the inside, they experience a kind of freedom most people spend their entire lives searching for.
Maturing is realizing they never burned witches. They burned midwives, healers, herbalists, and knowledgeable women.
Women who understood medicine, nature, and their own autonomy. Women whose knowledge threatened patriarchal control. The "witch hunts" were never about magic, they were about silencing women who couldn't be controlled.
Remember that story about the frog that doesn’t realize it’s being boiled because the temperature keeps rising little by little?
We’re all in the fucking pot.
I work the front desk at a small doctor’s office, and I wish people could see what happens on the other side of the phone. Every day, older patients call us confused.
They are told to use the patient portal, upload documents, check lab results online, fill out forms before the visit, and confirm everything through a link. Some of them do not know what a portal is.
Some do not have a smartphone.
Some have one, but they are afraid to click the wrong thing.
Last week, a man in his late 80s called about his test results.
He said, “Ma’am, I don’t mean to bother you, but the computer says I have a message and I don’t know how to open it.”
He sounded ashamed.
That broke my heart.
He should not have to feel ashamed for needing a human being.
Technology can be helpful. I understand that.
But when people who built this country are made to feel helpless because everything became a login and a password, we have gone too far.
Not everything needs to be an app.
Not every answer should be hidden behind a screen.
Sometimes people need a voice.
A patient person.
A real human who says, “Don’t worry, I can help you.”
Progress should not leave seniors behind.
Because one day, the world will move faster than us too.
And I hope someone is kind enough to slow down.
A personalized mRNA cancer vaccine passed Phase 3, genuinely great news for melanoma patients!
What happens here? They sequence your tumor, find up to 34 mutations unique to it, and build a custom vaccine that trains your immune system to hunt those exact cells.
In a phase 2 trial earlier this year the vaccine with immunotherapy has shown ~49% lower risk of recurrence or death vs immunotherapy alone, which is the current standard of care. We are waiting now for the details of the phase 3.
After that that concept is now expanding to lung, kidney, bladder cancer and hopefully to many more to come.
Huge win for science!
A personalized mRNA cancer vaccine has succeeded in a Phase 3 trial for melanoma.
It uses the same fundamental mRNA platform as the COVID vaccines and could open an entirely new chapter in cancer treatment.
This is why we fund mRNA technology research.
