New EU rules on return need to respect international and EU human rights standards. Creating offshore return hubs with limited safeguards, expanded use of detention - including of children, and weakened protections that risk refoulement, all warrant careful reconsideration. Reforms must genuinely reflect the EU's commitment to fair, sustainable and human rights-based migration governance - @volker_turk
Overnight, a large-scale combined attack by Russian armed forces with long-range missiles and drones killed 4 people and injured at least 89, most of them in Kyiv city and region, according to Ukrainian authorities. Our team will be visiting sites of the attack. Long-range weapons are one of the main reasons for why casualties so far in 2026 are higher than in the same period last year. At least 18 civilians were reportedly killed and more than 120 were injured in renewed Russian long-range missile and drone attacks on multiple cities across Ukraine that started on Wednesday evening and continued through the night. The attack struck Odesa, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Kyiv, some of Ukraine largest cities.
Our team visited several impact sites in Kyiv, including one where a 12-year-old boy was killed in an overnight attack and talked to witnesses and victims. In total, the attack killed at least four civilians and injured 62, including four children, in the capital, according to local authorities.
In Odesa, one of the injured told us about a young couple - a 19-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man - who were killed in an early morning strike that damaged a residential building. They were among 9 people killed in the evening and overnight attacks on the city, according to local authorities.
This latest barrage is one of the deadliest single waves of attacks in recent weeks, bringing April’s verified civilian casualties so far to at least 91 killed and hundreds injured. The high number of civilian casualties in April follows a sharp rise in civilian deaths and injuries in March.
