Experiences with Maha Periyava: The God who saved my life

I had requested Mudaliyar in Kanchipuram to lend me some money to meet the expenses of my daughter’s wedding. He agreed to help and told me to meet him on a particular day at three in the afternoon. I started from Chengalpat and went to Kanchipuram on the appointed day. Before meeting the gentleman, I desired to receive Sri Maha Periyava’s darshan and so went to the SriMatham. It was possible to receive Sri Maha Periyava’s darshan that day only at two o’clock in the afternoon.

Moreover, Sri Maha Periyava began to chat with me at leisure about everything under the sun, in the most unusual manner. As for my mind, it was solely fixed upon my appointment with Mudaliyar at three. Finally at about 5.30, Sri Maha Periyava gave me leave to depart.

I almost ran to Mudaliyar’s house. I was worried that the gentleman might change his mind and refuse to lend me the money. In trepidation, I knocked on his door softly. The Mudaliyar himself opened the door and welcomed me heartily. He said, “I had agreed to meet you at three o’clock. But I had to go out on some work and returned only now. Besides, I learnt that till six this evening, it is inauspicious time according to the almanac. So I wished I had told you to come at about six o’clock. It is good that you have yourself come now. The hour is now auspicious. You may take your loan now.”

I felt as if someone had given me a hard knock on my head. It was then clear to me as to why Sri Maha Periyava had made me stay there for so long before giving me permission to leave.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: How to Welcome and Serve Guests

It was during the height of summer. Some devotees arrived sweating in the sweltering heat, for Periyava’s darshan. Their eagerness to receive Periyaval’s darshan did not let them mind the fact that they were very thirsty. Periyaval told an attendant to give them the juice of the vilva fruits that had come from Kashi. The devotees were delighted beyond measure. Periyaval’s compassion cooled their hearts. At once Periyaval called His attendant who was fanning Him and instructed that he do the same for the visitors. The visitors were shocked. “This is sacrilegious. The fan that is used for Periyava should not be used for us,” they said in one voice. “We are ordinary folk.”

Periyaval said, “It is the Lord who is the soul in every body. As far as the fan is concerned, one body is the same as another.”

The devotees were delighted to hear this, which sounded like a revelation from the Upanishads. “Now everywhere you have electric fans and fridges. So, we have forgotten how to welcome and serve guests. One must fan the visitor, offer water to drink… we have forgotten all this. Children do not understand the significance of all this. That is why I told them to serve you some juice and fan you. Watching this at least a few will put our culture into practice.

The vilva tree is very sacred. The Vaidya Shastra says that there is gold in the leaves of the vilva tree. If one receives vilva leaves from Siva-puja every day and eats it as prasada, the body will shine like gold, they say. One must rub the pulp of the vilva fruit upon the head and then bathe. It is so very cooling and does good to the eyes. Now vilva trees have become scarce. Even in Siva temples, only very old vilva trees can be seen. It is very meritorious to plant a vilva sapling and nurture it. It is most auspicious of trees, Sri Vriksha. It is good even the propagate that growing a vilva tree will increase one’s prosperity.”

Even as Periyava finished speaking a peasant woman arrived. She too was very tired. Periyaval instructed the attendants to serve vilva juice and buttermilk to her. The sun was scorching outside. But it was a cool shower that was raining in Periyava’s heart. It is so easy for Periyava to make every heart feel the pleasant chill of an air-conditioner.

*குருவாயூரப்பனே தலையை அசைத்து அங்கீகரித்த நாராயணீயம்*

இந்திய ஆன்மிக இலக்கிய வரலாற்றில் சில நூல்கள் வெறும் இலக்கியங்கள் அல்ல.

அவை பக்தியின் உயிரோட்டமாகவே போற்றப்படுகின்றன.

அவற்றில் ஒன்றாகத் திகழ்வது “ஸ்ரீ நாராயணீயம்.” ஸ்ரீமத் பாகவதத்தின் சாரமாக, குருவாயூரப்பனின் திருவடிகளில் அர்ப்பணிக்கப்பட்ட இந்த மகாகாவியம், பக்தி, ஞானம், சரணாகதி ஆகியவற்றின் உச்சமாக விளங்குகிறது.

இந்த நூலை எழுதிய மேல்பத்தூர் நாராயண பட்டத்திரி, கடுமையான வாத நோயால் உடலையே அசைக்க முடியாத நிலையில் இருந்தார்.

அவரால் குருவாயூரப்பனைப் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை.

ஆனால், குருவாயூரப்பனே தனது திருமுகத்தைத் திருப்பி, தலையை அசைத்து அவரது ஒவ்வொரு ஸ்லோகத்தையும் கேட்டார் என்று பக்தி மரபில் போற்றப்படும் இந்த நிகழ்வு, இன்று வரை கோடிக்கணக்கான பக்தர்களின் மனதை நெகிழச் செய்கிறது.

கேரள மாநிலம், திருச்சூர் மாவட்டத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள ஸ்ரீ குருவாயூரப்பன் திருக்கோயில், இந்தியாவின் மிக முக்கியமான வைணவத் திருத்தலங்களில் ஒன்றாகும். இங்கு அருள்பாலிக்கும் குருவாயூரப்பன், பாலகிருஷ்ணன் திருக்கோலத்தில் பக்தர்களுக்கு அருள் வழங்குகிறார்.

இந்தத் திருத்தலம், எண்ணற்ற பக்தர்களின் கண்ணீரைத் துடைத்த தெய்வீக பூமியாகப் போற்றப்படுகிறது.

கி.பி. 16-ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் வாழ்ந்த மேல்பத்தூர் நாராயண பட்டத்திரி, சமஸ்கிருத இலக்கியத்திலும் வேத சாஸ்திரங்களிலும் சிறந்து விளங்கிய மகா பண்டிதர்.

அவரது குரு அச்சுத பிஷாரடி கடுமையான வாத நோயால் அவதிப்பட்டு வந்தார்.

தனது குருவின் துன்பத்தைப் பார்த்த பட்டத்திரி, “என் குருவின் நோய் என்னிடம் வரட்டும்; அவர் குணமடையட்டும்.” என்று மனமாரப் பிரார்த்தித்ததாக பக்தி மரபு கூறுகிறது.

அவரது சரணாகதியால், குருவின் வாத நோய் பட்டத்திரிக்கு ஏற்பட்டதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது.

வாத நோய் நாளுக்கு நாள் அதிகரித்தது.

நடக்க முடியவில்லை.

நிற்க முடியவில்லை.

கழுத்தைக் கூட திருப்ப முடியாத அளவுக்கு உடல் வலியால் வாடினார்.

ஆனால், அவரது மனம் மட்டும் இறைவன் மீது அசையாத நம்பிக்கையோடு இருந்தது.

எழுத்தச்சன் கூறிய மர்மமான உபதேசம் :

அப்போது, பட்டத்திரி, துஞ்சத்து எழுத்தச்சன் என்பவரை சந்தித்து, “இந்த நோயிலிருந்து விடுபட என்ன செய்ய வேண்டும்?” என்று கேட்டார். அப்போது எழுத்தச்சன், “மீன் தொட்டு கூட்டு.” என்று சுருக்கமாக கூறியதாக பாரம்பரிய வரலாறு கூறுகிறது. இந்த வார்த்தையின் பொருளை முதலில் பட்டத்திரி புரிந்து கொள்ளவில்லை. பின்னர் அதன் ஆழமான அர்த்தம் அவருக்கு விளங்கியது. “மத்ஸ்ய அவதாரத்திலிருந்து தொடங்கி, ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனின் மகிமைகளைப் பாடு.” என்பதே அந்த உபதேசத்தின் உண்மையான பொருள்.

கண்ணீர் விட்ட பக்தர் :
கடுமையான வாத நோயால் நடக்க முடியாத பட்டத்திரியை பத்து பேர் சேர்ந்து ஒரு பல்லக்கில் தூக்கிச் சென்று, குருவாயூருக்கு அழைத்து வந்தனர்.

முதலில் நாராயண சரஸ் எனப்படும் புனிதக் குளத்தில் நீராடச் செய்தனர்.

பின்னர், குருவாயூரப்பன் சன்னதிக்கு எதிரே இருந்த ஒரு மண்டபத்தில் அவரை அமர வைத்தனர்.

இன்றும் அந்த இடம் “பட்டத்திரி மண்டபம்” என்ற பெயரில் பக்தர்களால் போற்றப்படுகிறது.

நோயின் காரணமாக பட்டத்திரியால் கழுத்தைக் கூட திருப்ப முடியவில்லை.

அதனால் குருவாயூரப்பனின் திருமுகத்தை தரிசிக்க இயலவில்லை.

அவர் கண்ணீர் மல்கப் பிரார்த்தித்தார்.

“குருவாயூரப்பா…உன்னைப் பற்றிப் பாடுவதற்காகவே வந்திருக்கிறேன்.

ஆனால் உன் திருமுகத்தைப் பார்க்கக் கூட என்னால் முடியவில்லை!” என்று உருக்கமாக அழுதார்.

பக்தனுக்காக தலையைத் திருப்பிய குருவாயூரப்பன் :

பக்தனின் கண்ணீரைக் கண்ட குருவாயூரப்பன் கருணையுடன், “பட்டத்திரியே…உன்னால் என்னைப் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை என்பதற்காக ஏன் வருந்துகிறாய்? நான் உன்னைப் பார்க்க முடியாதா? நீ பாடு, நான் என் திருமுகத்தை உன்னை நோக்கித் திருப்பி, ஒவ்வொரு ஸ்லோகத்தையும் கேட்கிறேன்.” என்று அருளியதாக பக்தி மரபு கூறுகிறது.

அன்றிலிருந்து பட்டத்திரி பாடிய ஒவ்வொரு ஸ்லோகத்தையும் குருவாயூரப்பன் தலையை மெதுவாக அசைத்து அங்கீகரித்தார்.

நாராயணீயத்தின் பிறப்பு :

அதன் பின்னர் தினமும் ஒரு தசகம் வீதம் மொத்தம் 100 தசகங்கள், அதாவது 1036 ஸ்லோகங்கள் என்று நூறு நாட்கள் தொடர்ந்து பட்டத்திரி பாடினார். அவ்வாறு உருவானதே “ஸ்ரீ நாராயணீயம்.” இந்த நூல், ஸ்ரீமத் பாகவதத்தின் சாரமாகவும், குருவாயூரப்பனின் மகிமையைப் பாடும் ஆன்மிகக் காவியமாகவும் போற்றப்படுகிறது.

நாராயணீயத்தின் முதல் ஸ்லோகம், “ஸாந்த்ரானந்தாவபோதாத்மகம்…” என்று தொடங்குகிறது.

பக்தி மரபில், இந்த முதல் ஸ்லோகத்தின் தொடக்கச் சொல்லையே குருவாயூரப்பன் அருளியதாக நம்பப்படுகிறது.

அதனால் இந்த நூல் வெறும் மனிதர் எழுதிய காவியம் அல்ல.

இறைவனின் அருளால் பிறந்த தெய்வீக நூல்.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: The God that saved my life

Once a High Court Judge from Chennai came on inspection to the Chengalpat District Court. He would always have a lot of work awaiting his attention. So, he would schedule his work meticulously and come over. During one such visit, he was to return early to Chennai. The Judge had planned to have only Sri Maha Periyava's darshan on completion of the inspection, before he returned to Chennai. Making the necessary arrangements, I went with the Judge in his car to SriMatham, Kanchipuram, and we had darshan of Maha Periyava. After conversing with the Judge, Maha Periyava ordered me to take the Judge around some big temples in Kanchipuram.

I was apprehensive to talk to the Judge. He wanted to get back immediately, but for me, I could not refuse to comply with Sri Periyava's orders. With great hesitation I told him about Sri Maha Periyava's orders. As he agreed to it half-heartedly, I took him to some of the temples. After a delay of around two hours, the Judge started back for Chennai.

There was a strong wind blowing with heavy rain at that time. When we reached the highway, we saw workers removing a large tree that had fallen on the road. When we inquired, they said that the tree had fallen down about one and a half hours back, but they could manage to assemble workers and start getting it off the road only by then. Only then we understood the sookshmam (subtle work) of Sri Maha Periyava's orders.

Perhaps if we had ignored Maha Periyava's words, that tree could have fallen right on our car. Even if it was not to be so, we could have got struck in that place for a long time without being able to continue our journey. The compassionate orders of Sri Maha Periyava saved our lives on that day and I can never forget it.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: In the Protection of Kanyakurichi Amman
A gentleman came from Pattukottai for Sri Maha Periyava’s darshan.
“I bought a new car. From the time I got it, there have been many accidents. I sought the advice of astrologers and performed a number of expiatory rites. Nothing has helped.”
Periyava was silent for a while. Then he asked the gentleman a question,“Is there a village called Kanyakurichi near your town?”
The gentleman was taken aback.
“There is a Mahamaya temple there… very powerful deity. Send fifty rupees for abhishekha to be performed to the Ambal (Goddess) there. Have the words, ‘In the Protection of Kanyakurichi Amman,’ painted on the front side of your car.”
The gentleman was dumbfounded. Recovering himself he said, “Kanyakurichi Amman is the deity worshipped by our family. My father and mother would visit that temple every year. They would have abhishekha performed for the deity. The children in our family would be tonsured there. Somehow in course of time we have forgotten all this. Now it is my good fortune that Periyava has reminded me.”
There were no further mishaps in that car. After all, it was Mahamaya who was protecting the vehicle.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: The Mystic Who Dazzled the Western Professors

A few years back some Russian and American professors, who came to Chennai, had darshan of Maha Swamigal.

In the year 1987, Soviet Union celebrated the Indian Cultural Festival. It was my custom to write research papers related to our culture and tradition and show it to Periyavargal. We took one such blessed paper to hand over to Professor Ribekov, the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Oriental Studies in Moscow. The only picture that adorned his room was of the Kanchi Periyavar! What wonder, he had not even seen Swamigal in person until then. He said, 'When I come to Chennai--one, I should meet the Kanchi sage and converse with him and two, I want a valampuri shankhu (a conch with threads going clockwise)'.

After some years, Ribekov came to Chennai. We went to Kanchi with him. As we entered the Matham, they said, "No darshan today, Periyavargal has fever."

The man who came with me had noted down the questions he had in his mind and were seeking answers for them. When it seemed that we would be disappointed, somebody came and told us, "Periyava asked me to bring you people to him." A crowdless, private darshan for us.

Periyavargal, who was lying down, got up and silently looked at the newcomer. Within minutes, tears of joy started issuing out of the man who came to meet the sage. No one talked, it was very silent. At length Periyavar himself talked to me: "Tell him to ask whatever questions he has to." Ribekov said, "I got the answers even without asking them." He could not get around to speak anything more.

Periyavargal: Though Sanskrit is seen mixed in the Russian language, is it there in the dialect spoken in the extreme north of that country?" Ribekov was taken aback. "It is true, it is not so," he said.

Periyavargal: Your country has the name Rishivarsham. The reason was, it was only there that Rishis like Yajnavalkya established a Vedic research centre.

The sage gave us many more such details and made us go ecstatic. When we took leave of him, Ribekov told the sage, "What should I do to become a Hindu?"

"Even without doing anything you are a Hindu."

Not satisfied, he said, "I would rather have a Hindu name." Looking at us and laughing, Periyavargal said, "With a white beard this man has the look of a Rishi. Let him have the name 'Rishi'." Ribekov was immensely happy. Rishi (Ribekov) has now started a branch of the Ramakrishna Mutt in Moscow.

As he had never crossed the boundaries of Chennai in his lifetime and he could not speak any other language, he was feeling anxious and scared till he reached Mahagoan.

When he was standing on the road thinking about whom to ask the way to where Periyava was camping, a lorry loaded with sugarcanes came that way and he stopped it by waving his hand. He asked the driver in broken Hindi where Sankaracharyar was staying. The driver, as if he had known him very well, took him in his lorry and left him in the place where Periyava was camping. When he was worried as to how much money the driver would demand, the driver refused to accept even a paisa because he was happy to have taken him to Periyava’s place.

Balachandar was overwhelmed by the compassion showered on him by Sri Periyava. He ran inside to the place where Sri Maha Periyava was camping to have His Darshan. He had His Darshan to his full satisfaction. Although Periyava did not speak a word, he was happy that He fulfilled his desire of seeing the Sakshat Parameshwaran and with that happiness he started towards the railway station thanking Him in his mind.

The train to Chennai was about to arrive. He stood in the queue with the hundred rupees in his pocket which he had got as loan. As he stood in the queue, he was thinking that he would return the balance money after paying for the ticket immediately after reaching Chennai and pay back the remaining outstanding amount at the rate of ten rupees per month.

At that time, he heard two men talking in Tamil. They came and stood just behind him in the queue. He was happy to see Tamil speaking people there. They asked him if he was travelling to Chennai. When he replied in the affirmative, they took him away from the queue.

“Three of us came here for Sri Maha Periyava’s Darshan. We had reserved three first class tickets to Chennai. But one among us is proceeding to Bombay (Mumbai) and we came here to cancel one ticket. Now that you are also going to Chennai, you can travel on this ticket with us. Why cancel it and waste the money?”

He was not able to digest the incidents happening one after the other in this way. He hesitated thinking whether they would ask him to pay the first class ticket amount.

One of them, Sri Raman said, “Why are you thinking? We are happy that we are able to take with us a Periyava devotee like you. You need not pay us anything for the ticket. Do come with us.”

Tears welled up in his eyes thinking about the abundant compassion showered on him now, the same way as on that day when he cried because of his inability to have His Darshan. With folded hands, he turned in the direction where that Mahan was staying, melting in his mind.

When he thought whether a God could bless him this way by fulfilling his desire without having to spend a paisa, his amazement was never-ending.
