The observed genetic diversity between Omicron sequences could either be because this variant has been circulating for longer than we anticipated or due to challenges with sequencing. We do not know which one it is yet.

Omicron's abundant spike mutations and deletions interfere with sequencing, sometimes leading to incomplete genomes.
