वह मस्जिद से बाहर निकला था और सरदार पटेल पर हमला किया था।

हमें सिखाया गया कि महात्मा गांधी की हत्या नाथूराम गोडसे ने की थी,

लेकिन हमें कभी नहीं सिखाया गया कि 14 मई 1939 को भावनगर में सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल पर किसने हमला किया,

किसने उनकी हत्या करने की कोशिश की, और अदालत ने कितने आरोपियों को फांसी या आजीवन कारावास की सज़ा सुनाई।

भावनगर में 14 और 15 मई 1939 को भावनगर राज्य प्रजा परिषद का पाँचवाँ अधिवेशन आयोजित होना था, ��िसकी अध्यक्षता सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल करने वाले थे।

जब सरदार पटेल भावनगर पहुँचे, तो रेलवे स्टेशन से एक भव्य शोभायात्रा निकाली गई।

सरदार पटेल एक खुली जीप में बैठे हुए थे, दोनों ओर खड़ी जनता का अभिवादन स्वीकार कर रहे थे।

जब जुलूस खार गेट चौक पहुँचा, तो नगीना मस्जिद में छिपे हुए 57 तथाकथित शांतिप्रिय लोग तलवारें, चाकू और भाले लेकर जीप की ओर दौड़ पड़े।

दो युवकों — बच्छुभाई पटेल और जाधवभाई मोदी — ने यह दृश्य देखा।

उन्होंने तुरंत सरदार पटेल को चारों ओर से घेर लिया ताकि उन्हें बचा सकें, और अपनी जान की परवाह किए बिना, वे उन वारों को अपने ऊपर ले लिए जो सरदार पटेल के लिए किए गए थे।

उन्होंने सरदार पटेल की ढाल बनकर अपने प्राणों की आहुति दे दी।

हमलावरों ने दोनों युवकों पर तलवार से कई वार किए — बच्छुभाई पटेल वहीं शहीद हो गए, जबकि जाधवभाई मोदी ने अस्पताल में दम तोड़ दिया।

आज भी उन वीर युवकों की प्रतिमाएँ उसी स्थान पर स्थापित हैं जहाँ उन्होंने अपने प्राण न्योछावर किए थे।

तत्कालीन ब्रिटिश सरकार ने इस घटना की गहन जांच की और एक विशेष न्यायालय गठित किया।

57 आरोपियों को गिरफ्तार किया गया, जिनमें से:

• आजाद अली

• रुस्तम अल�� सिपाही — को फांसी की सज़ा सुनाई गई।

निम्नलिखित 15 अपराधियों को आजीवन कारावास की सज़ा दी गई:

• कासिम दोसा घांची

• लतीफ मियां काज़ी

• मोहम्मद करीम सैनिक

• सैयद हुसैन

• चंद्र गुलाब सैनिक

• हाशिम सुमरा ताह

• लुहार मूसा अब्दुल्ला

• अली मियां अहमद मियां सैयद

• अली मामद सुलेमान

• मोहम्मद सुलेमान कुम्��ार

• अबू बकर अब्दुल्ला

• लुहार अहमदिया

• मोहम्मद मियां काज़ी

उन्होंने अदालत में कहा कि सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल ने कोलकाता में मुस्लिम लीग के खिलाफ भाषण दिया था,

जिसके कारण उनकी हत्या की साजिश रची गई।

यह अत्यंत दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है कि सरदार पटेल की मृत्यु के बाद, नेहरू सरकार ने इस ऐतिहासिक घटना को इतिहास की पुस्तकों से मिटा दिया,

ताकि आने वाली पीढ़ियाँ यह न जान सकें कि सरदार पटेल पर भी एक घा��क हमला और हत्या का षड्यंत्र हुआ था।
