Pretty remarkable and rarely circulated footage, apparently filmed by workers inside 2 World Financial Center, the 44-story skyscraper directly across the West Side Highway from the World Trade Center.
You get an unusually clear aerial view of the lobby entrance to the North Tower, including the northwest corner where the FDNY command post was established. Essentially, we are seeing the outside perspective of the situation captured from inside the tower by Jules Naudet.
There are a lot of interesting details in the footage. You can clearly see the narrow passage between the North Tower and the Marriott, as well as the pedestrian bridge connecting the northwest side of the complex across the West Side Highway to the World Financial Center. That bridge would later become part of Battalion Chief Joseph Pfeifer’s escape route after the South Tower collapsed.
Later, you can even hear a PA announcement inside 2 World Financial Center telling everyone to remain calm and that there is no threat to the building.
Then, around the 1:30 mark, you hear Flight 175 roaring toward the South Tower before impact.
Even after people clearly see the plane hit and begin yelling exactly what happened, others in the background are still shouting, “It was a bomb!”
At that point, the people filming realize their own building may no longer be safe and decide to leave.
Just before they go, the cameraman asks: “Should I bring the camera?”
