Hearing Janice's story in "Finding Dawn" was heartbreaking; what she had experienced as a child & on the streets was cruel. So happy that she was able to break the cycle in her life. It's terrible how many Indigenous women have to go through such experiences #gndr1000
I found the statistic "two-thirds of women involved in street prostitution in Winnipeg had been taken into care as children" very interesting. I would be interested to know their stories and why they were taken into care. Do they have Indigenous background by chance? #gndr1000
@CaitlinTerao @DanielleBickfo2 Agree with you both! The spotlight must be taken off of the victim, as suggested by Katz and yourself, and focus on the perpetrator. This way the fault isn't pushed upon the victim, as it typically is within our society right now. #gndr1000
@SamyukthaChand2 This is so true. I loved when Byanyima stated, "unpaid care work actually undermines the dignity of a woman because she's not seen and valued for what she contributes". It's sad how women are expected to do the unpaid care work to the point that it feels like a burden. #gndr1000
I always wondered why society has such an obsession with welfare fraud but it is clearly reflected by the government. One bad apple should not spoil the bunch. Many single mothers are left to choose between feeding themselves or their children, which is heartbreaking. #gndr1000
@katie_follett19@CritchJessica I agree with you both! No matter what someone's profession is, we must all check our privileges and biases. It's important to leave biases at the door, especially when peoples lives are on the line. Everyone deserves equal treatment #gndr1000
I agree that unintentional racism is the most dangerous since the individual being racist is completely ignorant that they are even doing so; while the individual experiencing racism has no evidence to back up their experience. It's sad how often this happens in society #gndr1000
@Rebecca21435536@HalaAlsheikh3 Russell was indeed inspirational! It's good to hear from someone in the industry that modelling pics aren't "her". She told & showed us a completely different lifestyle than the pictures. It's important for society to realize that things aren't always as them seem. #gndr1000
I loved hearing Russell's TED talk. Everyone judges people for what their life "appears" to be like when they have no idea what that person struggles with on the inside. In Russell's case, insecurity even though she's a model. Everyone's fighting a battle, be kind. #gndr1000
@MUNTab136 I am not a social worker yet but after hearing some things that social workers have done in the past, with regard to residential schooling, etc., has really hit me hard as well. It's so important for us to take the time to educate ourselves and stop the abuse. #gndr1000
I have a whole new perspective on Canada 150 and Canada day overall. We have a holiday set to celebrate the colonization of our country. So many Canadians celebrate Canada day because they are proud to be Canadian. Are you proud of it's history and what's been done? #gndr1000
@RyanG5672 She has such a positive attitude indeed! Hearing her story was very inspirational. She really tied in Crenshaw's definition of intersectionality with her unique background. #gndr1000
After reading Pinto's article this week I realized how uneducated I was about the abuse of disabled women. It's not a topic that is talked about often, so I can only imagine the lack of research that has been done. Time to start the conversation about this issue! #gndr1000
"How we got gay" is just a reminder of how much mistreatment gay people have experienced and continue to experience today. I love how the film said the aids epidemic "taught gays how to fight back". The fight is definitely not over, we need equality for everyone. #gndr1000
@MahinaGl So true!! I feel that the medical field is sometimes reflected upon the medical practitioners opinions too much. All their biases should be left out of their practice. #gndr1000
@Crystal99727985#gndr1000 hearing Draco's father say she was a gift was so touching. So many parents discourage their children to be who they are if it's not the norm. I wish that every individual from the LGBTQ2SA+ community received this kind of acceptance from their families.
#gndr1000 I really enjoyed watching the film Transforming Gender. It's good to see that there are trans people who live 'normal lives' although most have went through their fair share of experiences to get where they are today. We must not worry about what gender a person is.
@BrandiL79382971#gndr1000 Something definitely has to change! That video was so difficult to watch. Hearing the "psychologists" talk about their "treatments" made me so sick to my stomach. Ironic how there's a double standard when it comes to girls playing with 'boy toys' π€
@CritchJessica Hearing the abuse and trauma that these people went through really hit me hard. Society is so set on male and female identities and forcing everyone to conform to such things. It is so sad for intersex individuals and what they have to go through. #gndr1000
