First Class First Aid Training.
On a mission to improve survival rates of sudden cardiac arrest in Ireland. Now it's only 7%, lets work together to improve.
This week we were delighted to host one of the Real FX Simulation moulage training courses from Linzi Foxcroft at The ATACC Group HQ! 🩸🎨
Our LAB team had the opportunity to take part, building on their knowledge, refining their expertise, and developing new skills to elevate their practice.
The standard of work produced over the last few days has been fantastic, and we’re excited to see Lucy & Hannah put everything they’ve learned into action.

🫀 Who do CPR manikins represent? And who do they leave out?
Most CPR manikins are white, lean, and male – but real-world cardiac arrest patients are far more diverse. Women, people of colour, and obese individuals are less likely to receive bystander CPR and have poorer outcomes. Could the lack of diversity in training manikins be part of the problem?
A new scoping review in the Emergency Medicine Journal explored this question:
🔍 Out of 2,719 studies screened, only 15 studies looked at manikin diversity.
👩🏾⚕️ Just 5% of training videos used non-white manikins; only 1% used female manikins.
🧍♂️🧍♀️ DIY modifications (adding breasts, wigs, clothing, or body mass) were common – but commercially available diverse manikins remain rare.
💡 Early evidence suggests racially and gender-diverse manikins may increase comfort and engagement during CPR training.
👉 The review calls for educators, organisations, and manufacturers to step up:
✔️ Make diverse manikins more accessible.
✔️ Ensure training reflects the populations most at risk.
✔️ Recognise that representation may save lives.

🫀 We need to talk about Annie 🫀
For decades, millions have learnt CPR using Resusci-Annie – a white, slim, blond female manikin created in the 1960s. But how well does Annie reflect the people we actually resuscitate in real life? @ResusCouncilUK@RCollEM
In a recent EMJ editorial, Ellen Weber @emjeditor challenges us to think critically about diversity in CPR training.
A scoping review found:
✅ Most manikins remain white and slim
✅ Only 5% of instructional videos used non-white manikins
✅ Just 12% of teaching institutions reported having diverse manikins
✅ Black participants reported feeling more engaged when manikins reflected their ethnicity

We already know that CPR is less likely to be performed in deprived or minority communities. Could the lack of representation in training be sending the wrong message?
If we want to tackle inequities in resuscitation, perhaps it’s time to start with Annie.

CPR training is on the curriculum, but many students are still missing out. We’re urging governments to implement systems that ensure every student actually receives this vital training.

PURPLE (Life threatening cardiac or respiratory arrest) or RED (life threatening illness or injury, other than cardiac arrest) calls receive the highest priority in NEOC.
Close to half of the 1000+ daily emergency calls into NEOC are classified as life threatening calls.
A stroke is a life-threatening medical condition. The word FAST will help you recognise when a stroke is happening and what you need to do.
Call 112 or 999 immediately. The sooner a person gets treatment, the less damage is likely to happen.
