Every 13 MAR is set aside to honor and celebrate the service, loyalty, and sacrifice of American military and working dogs, and to commemorate the official establishment of the U.S. Army's War Dog Program ("K-9 Corps") on March 13, 1942 - the first time dogs formally were included in the Armed Forces.
For those fortunate enough to train and serve beside them, these dogs are much more than furry companions. They walk point, often straight into danger, in and out of combat, to carry out various missions as assigned. They also hold the rank of a Non-Commissioned Officer, usually one grade higher than their human handlers - to ensure they’re always treated with respect and dignity. Today, we honor these K-9 Warriors, and for the countless lives and missions they serve(d) and defend(ed).
"Mom, I've been shot, I'm bleeding, and I think I am going to die."
These are the words that haunted Romi Gonen’s mother for 471 days while her daughter was held hostage in Gaza.
Now, Romi is home, but the suffering and horrors that she faced will mean that her road to recovery will be long and arduous.
