I was only there for one night tho so I don’t really know. Just surprised to see it called out as a Here’s Why Japan’s Better city. To be fair, the other thing I didn’t like about it was its downtown was like an American downtown; so I suppose the quoted example is well-chosen!
I spoke to a Japanese man in Kyoto who said he grew up in Osaka, but moved 20 years prior because there were too many Chinese. “And I hate the Chinese”. I assumed he was overstating things til I went to Osaka and every ‘izakaya’ restaurant I saw was actually a Chinese restaurant
@mightydudbolt @SensitiveManlet After the quote-tweeted clip, I looked for the New Hope version of the scene on youtube and couldn’t find it - the only ones I could find were the 1977 version 😅
@goblinodds There is a wonderful and deep and concrete analysis of different ways rationalist social groups try to handle this sort of thing. By mingyuan at lesswrong, who was involved in adjudicating at least one (and I think more, don’t remember) big one: https://t.co/dm5LaaiwQT
@drethelin My mom and brother are typically quite intelligent and considered, but when my uncle, after divorce, was open about looking for a new wife, they talked bad about him: “It sounds like he’s just looking for any woman!” As if intentionality itself here was suspicious! Drove me nuts
Shortly after a breakup I was quite depressed and had lost my joi de vivre; then I went on a road trip through Northern California mountains where it was snowing, and a bad driver was driving our car, and I suddenly rediscovered the will to live
tried to off myself during my first year in the USA by going to the far reaches of the forest where the biggest sequoia in the area was rumored to be but ended up getting stalked by growling mountain lions and I was so scared I gave up on the whole emo thing and opted to survive
You can tell how similar and of shared culture Europeans and Americans are by the choice of the perennial topic to fight over on here: household air conditioning units. If we had actual differences, we’d argue about those, instead of this tired triviality.
Just realized: I look down at people who rage against AI art, but I despise the use of AI for any sort of writing output whatsoever. I also view myself as a writer and have never been any good at drawing. So maybe I should give the AI-art haters a break; probably we’re alike.
The AI gets the Trump Dance wrong and yet he posts it anyway…
I was proud of my knowledge of the ins and outs of the arm movements and he just… tweets this out..
@PFIRorg The statistic says that more H1Bs had advanced degrees, not that more H1Bs were hired instead of Americans. I expect the number of H1Bs is down overall, though I haven’t checked.
@ellelledeell@dalipolitial@nixonfoundation Interesting - I have Guns as well as The Proud Tower on audiobook and love their reader. Just checked - it’s “Wanda McCaddon”. And I am pretty particular about readers.
A president only fights in case of disaster; so too Yoda, imo. But the feeling in Prequel II is that swordfighting is something Yoda does fairly naturally and is good at, which kinda plays against what a Wise Master is. Like a wizard being revealed to be just a spellsword.
This is an interesting criticism. I do feel the concept of Saber Yoda was off, but not in a meathead way. It’s like.. in Air Force One, it’s cool that the president has to fight, but that’s because the president isn’t normally a figure who has to fight. Similar with Yoda maybe?
A huge problem with modern writers and critics is the idea that melee combat is a lesser form of ability. They see Yoda resorting to sword when at a stalemate with raw magic as him being a meathead
I had multiple meetings with the seniors where I told them to cut it out, and I mentored the juniors kindly on the side. The juniors’ output and thought processes improved by a crazy amount. Both seniors later admitted they had been wrong to be so harsh.
I joined a four-man team at work; two seniors and two juniors. The seniors were extremely unhappy with the juniors and in every daily meeting they berated them.
It was a disaster. The juniors had become obsessed with proving they had worked, and were terrified to ask questions.
You can see how deeply feminine attitudes around male relationships have penetrated the psyche. To not realize that bullying is how you help young men is an incredibly feminine attitude. If you actually have “mentored” young men you would know this. Men should always be competing
