not too sure how to put myself out there, but i’m adrienne! i’m a beginner japanese to english literary translator who currently specializes in translating poetry!
im unfortunately in the category of being able to read a lot and write fairly but practically being n5 when it comes to speaking 😭 quite the whiplash when stepping into grad school
One of the most difficult things for anglophones to understand about learning Japanese is the relative CHASM between speaking/ listening skills and reading/ writing skills. It is entirely possible to be great at one and awful at the other to an absurd degree.
Contrary to popular belief, knowing how to read Japanese doesn't mean I can speak it well 🥲
The panic I went into because I forgot how to say meal (食事)
Thank you patient ryokan employee. I'm sorry for fumbling my Japanese.
There's a trend amongst young JP girls lately called "solo wedding," aka taking wedding dress photos alone. If you're ever in Tokyo/Kanagawa and want to try it out for cheap and with great service, Dresspocket was a wonderful experience!
Only around 150 USD for 10 pics/3 dresses.
PLEASE SUPPORT TOKYOPOP YURI!!! they are one of the main license sources of yuri nowadays, and theyve been obtaining some really awesome titles 🥹 they have a great selection of josei as well as some awesome yuri titles being released soon!!!
I yapped at Japanese people on Skype until I could speak Japanese, I yapped about eroge until it got me a job working in eroge localization, and I yapped at my favorite voice actor until he let me interview him. Yap for your life. Yap for your future.
going to japan for the first time in a few days....! would love to pick up some literary magazines/short story collections if anyone has any recommendations?
and then people defend translations that make everyone sound like robots 😭 and insult the ones where they sound like actual people. because they are!! I’m sorry but I’ll forever defend translations that sound and feel natural (caveat: I don’t advocate for changing/omitting info)
Gonna be real—JP people speak like people. Yes, culture and language shape the way we speak but ultimately if you become acquainted with that you realize that people are people everywhere you go. That’s why I find MTL frustrating bc it really does give make everyone into a robot.
It's been feeling near impossible to get any freelance work lately... haven't had anything since the summer and i keep getting ghosted by publishing companies 🥲
