British colonial overlord Joseph Chamberlain had the audacity to offer Theodor Herzl, the so-called father of Zionism, a piece of East Africa as the site of a Jewish-only ethnostate. In the Seventh Zionist Congress debates, and in Herzl’s own diary entries from April–August 1903, he describes being offered territory in the British East Africa Protectorate as a potential “Nachtasyl,” a night refuge, for Jews fleeing pogroms in Eastern Europe. The land on the table was the Uasin Gishu plateau, a roughly 13,000 square kilometer tract in what was then the East Africa Protectorate, later known as Kenya.
