What's obscene is pretending that insufficient taxation is the problem when decades of government spending have demonstrated how spectacularly politicians can waste other people's money while failing to solve the problems they promised to fix.
Bernie's solution is always more money, more power, and less accountability.
At what point does government failure become an argument against giving it more?
@Coho29415979@RockChartrand Most communists say that they *personally* don't want suffering...it's just that factually the implementation of their ideals always leads to it. Many claim to not believe in God; yet they worship the god-beast Caesar; whom they look to for their providence.
@Coho29415979@RockChartrand I find that typically when somebody uses the word ''nuanced'' when making an argument that it's an indicator that you'll be hearing minimal fact followed by severe bullshit. Did you read the first 7 words you typed?
If food weren't grown for profit, most of it would never be produced in the first place. People would largely grow food for themselves and their families.
Profit is precisely what incentivizes people to produce food for complete strangers.
What communists are actually demanding is that someone else grow, harvest, process, and deliver their food without expecting anything in return.
They don't object to exploitation. They object to having to compensate the people whose labor keeps them alive.
Their ideal farmer isn't an entrepreneur. He's a slave whose only reward is another list of demands and sacrifices.
What could go wrong?
@loves5o College education leans heavily Left, and appeals to an individual's desire to be superior. Regurgitate the ideology, and you're a genius; shrugging off the constraints of your familial upbringing. So become a hardcore leftist: condescending, arrogant, superior, better than...
@mysteriouskat@roddreher The Left is already everything you've listed (other than likely to end up under Vance), and have shown that when they hold power, they will use lawfare against their political opponents. Start a small business in a blue state, operate it for 5 years, and report back on the Ds.
@Ariszn12 You think so little of your own capabilities that you envision a world where you are somehow entitled to the fruits of your neighbors' labor?
Socialists speak passionately of human rights, then invoke the “public interest” and “greater good” to justify subordinating individual rights to collective demands.
They promise abundance if only you grant them power, then demand sacrifices of your earnings, electricity, time, effort, and freedom for the cause.
They speak of dignity while encouraging dependence and resentment toward those who earn more, as though dignity could be obtained by laying claim to someone else's achievements.
They preach equality while rejecting its most essential form—equality before the law—in pursuit of an imposed equality of outcomes.
Socialism produces in appearances what capitalism produces in reality. Its promises are attractive precisely because they conceal the sacrifices required to pursue them.
This may be unpopular among Republicans, but I believe it deserves reflection.
Strictly on economics, many Republican arguments against immigration sound remarkably similar to Bernie Sanders' talking points from 2015.
Immigrants take American jobs, depress wages, increase competition, and undermine prosperity.
Most Republicans probably consider Bernie economically illiterate. So why adopt his reasoning?
Ronald Reagan recognized immigration as a source of American strength, entrepreneurship, and prosperity. He supported immigration enforcement without treating immigrants as an inherent economic burden.
Then there's assimilation. Republicans fear immigrants importing the authoritarian mindsets of the regimes they fled. Fair concern, but where was the outrage when Democrats promoted a version of multiculturalism that neglected shared American principles?
Multiculturalism should protect cultural identity while requiring respect for individual rights and constitutional principles.
You can defend borders and civic integration without embracing Bernie's protectionism or treating immigrants collectively as threats.
If Republicans reject Bernie's economics and admire Reagan's principles, perhaps they should examine why their immigration rhetoric increasingly resembles the former rather than the latter.
Everyone claims to want people fed, housed, educated, and treated with dignity. That's the easiest moral position imaginable, requiring neither thought nor effort.
The sincerity of that commitment is revealed by whether you're willing to examine what actually achieves those outcomes, what undermines them, and at whose expense.
By the socialist standard, even forced labor can be justified in pursuit of these goals, and even policies producing the opposite results can be defended as virtuous.
Virtue signaling earns applause for good intentions. Genuine concern demands understanding, evidence, and results. Far too many seem content with the applause.
Socialists routinely complain about exploitation, insist that running a business is easy, and claim worker-owned enterprises are superior. Yet capitalism gives them the freedom to prove it by starting their own businesses, treating workers better, and outcompeting the very people they condemn. For a movement claiming to represent the working class, they spend remarkably little effort demonstrating their supposedly superior model and an extraordinary amount demanding control over what others have built. Apparently, practicing what they preach requires more work than preaching.
Capitalism has a curious habit of creating luxuries faster than socialism can declare them necessities. Two hundred years ago, free modern healthcare and today’s standard of living would have ranked somewhere between a unicorn and a personal dragon. Capitalism creates the impossible; socialism arrives afterward to explain that mankind had been entitled to it all along.
If you haven't seen this watch now. It will knock you over
I haven't seen anyone from Liberal Inc engage this logically. What even is the response? We are forced to paint Helen Joyce into The Monster, the fascism, the far-right, the not-science, the hate?
It is a curious philosophy: poverty supposedly makes people steal, while wealth apparently makes them thieves. One begins to suspect the crime is simply having whatever amount of money the argument currently requires.
@Favwontmiss You don't understand, but then you proceed with your opinion, which by your admission, is ignorant? Perhaps you should seek understanding.
