New TheTinMen Podcast! ๐จ
After losing his childhood best friend, advertising veteran and film director Ben Akers co-founded โTalk Clubโ, an award-winning charity dedicated to menโs mental fitness, that hosts hundreds of self-run talk groups for thousands of men, all over the UK.
And not just talk groups, but also football, yoga, tennis, paddle ball, hiking groups, online or offline, you name it, however you want to do it, Talk Club is there for men.
Based on the belief of asking โHow are you out of 10?โ Talk Club is a space for compassion and care for men, not just a place for them to talk, but more importantly, a place for them to be heard.
Here Ben talks to TheTinMen about his journey, and how men talking can saves lives.

Suicide.
I'm choosing to be deliberately blunt and provocative in this post because it's necessary. Government, charities, football clubs are all pushing water up a hill in highlighting what is undoubtedly a major health crisis.
You take a rope.
You put it up in a garage or a tree nearby or far away.
You're thinking about every loved one you'll leave behind as you put that rope around your neck.
Then you drop.
Some are decapitated.
Some aren't.
All are found by someone who has a lifetime of trauma that will never leave them.
A son.
A daughter.
A brother.
A sister.
A mother.
A father.
I know 2 men who hung themselves.
One was found by his Mom.
One was found by his brother.
Neither have recovered fully. 20 and 30 years on.
A life sentence for people who were already worrying, terrified their loved one may do something.
So just visualise the above and ask, "is there another way"?
A segway for a moment.
I do a few Q&A's every year. Tales of yesterday with a 99% male audience of my age group.
After the stories and fun, my last question back to the audience is..
"Hands up if you struggle with a mental health issue".
Nobody ever puts a hand up. Despite 1 in every 3 of 500 attendees statistically struggling.
"Ah, nobody, that's fucking brilliant! Well I do! ". I then graphically tell people, stunned into silence about how a rope around my neck in the middle of nowhere jolted me to go home and cry like a baby to my Mom.
After the Q&A has finished, something always happens. I'll be chatting to a few guys, saying bye and one by one, men will come over and whisper " I struggle".
Or my mailbox the next day will have 30 emails from guys, their partners or kids saying " Dad/Uncle /Brother was there last night and what you said hit them hard".
And that's how some people realise that it's time to speak to a pal or family member or even rant to me in an email. It works, I often get a follow up email a year or 6 later saying that they took responsibility for their suicidal feelings and are now flying.
Humans are programmed to want to live, to have families and to keep the species growing and thriving. So for a human to want to short circuit that desire isn't normal, and it should never be spoken of as normal. It's the ultimate red flag.
If you suspect your mate, Dad, Brother, Uncle is struggling mentally, they deserve your intervention.
They deserve a " are you OK, please tell me what's up".
They deserve an opportunity to get past wanting to hang a rope over a tree or in a garage and slowly struggle until they die and you find them.
If you've been there and trust me I have plenty, then you'll know that text out of the blue, or a footie mate or one of your kids asking jow you are can open the curtains to some sunshine.
Because when suicide is your only answer, the room is already dark, and you can't see a way out.
So please, fucking pretty please, ask that husband, Dad, Uncle, Cousin, footie pal TODAY how they are.
You may be shocked what comes back but extremely glad that you asked.
For those who struggle, you're not alone.
Suicide. It's world suicide prevention day and month so I hope you spare this post a little time whether you struggle or not.
Suicide is the counter intuitive desire or need to short circuit the most human desire.
The desire to live.
Many of you struggle and over 15 years of posting here I've posted my suicidal ideation, and brutal truth of wanting, needing to end my life. And I receive emails of your stories wanting the same at times.
2 years ago I had a full breakdown. Train platforms multiple times a day, bridges, thinking 24/7 of ways to make it quick. The most terrifying months of my life.
I ran instead. A blessed relief and way out that literally saved my life alongside friends, family and therapy.
Wanting to die isn't normal. For anyone. Ever. It is ghe most serious red flag that identifies that person as very ill and in need of urgent and serious help.
The NHS is wonderful but the coffers as we know are empty and mental health support is creaking at a time when ur should be providing basic talking therapy, ongoing support and meditation if necessary. So many people are taking their life because of a lack of support which leads to hopelessness.
I'm anxious writing this because the earlier darker nights forme are one of a number of profound triggers. It sounds absurd doesn't it but that's the nature of everyone's individual mental health triggers, the can sound absurd to many so you keep quiet and plough on through. Multiply those triggers by 10 and for those who don't struggle it's an idea of the constant triggering that eventually becomes too much. Overwhelming.
If you don't struggle you may pass over this post without understanding that your Mum, Dad, Sister, Brother, partner or friend may be going through what I've set out above, and are close to doing something that could change a dozen lives. So I hope that if nothing else, if you believe one of those loved ones may be struggling, and I don't mean feeling blue, I mean fundemental changes you've seen ( men over 50 are chronically bad at speaking up), then please talk to them today.
Mental health issues aren't ever cured, they're managed, and life can be as normal as anyone else's even if those issues crop up regularly, but suicidal ideation destroys one life in its entirety but always a domino effect of many others who love or knew that person who took their own life.
I'll repeat, thinking about taking your own life is the ultimate in being poorly and needs urgent attention, help and understanding. It's never to be left.
To those who struggle, please speak to someone, even one outlet can make a difference and have absolute belief that brighter days will come, because they always do.
740,000 people took their own life on this planet last year. Doesn't sound many until you add the 5, 10, 20 people that then affects for life.
If you suspect you're struggling, please reach out and if you know someone who is, please talk to them, you have no idea the impact it makes.

@RockTheseTweets It's like a sports team. Players change and managers change but the team is still your team and people still pay to watch. What's the difference?
Finally found the passion for playing live again ๐ Noels acoustic version โSupersonicโ from a little covers gig on Saturday night. Warming up for coming back with the band!
@HereReallyNotIm@30YearsRed To be fair to Klopp, I thknk he's seen more as a Shankly type figure for this era after the 30 yrs of no league wins. I hope Slot is the Paisley but I doubt it
1 in 3 Britons will struggle with their mental health at some point, and in tough political and economic times its important there are people to sound off to.
5 years ago I opened my email to anyone struggling to sound off, without judgement. Men in particular find it hard to talk.
So as we're in midsummer but heading towards autumn and winter, a difficult time for many, my email is open again.
I can't guarantee a swift response, and those who need immediate help will get as much good information on great resources that are free for all. But sometimes it's just nice to know someone reads and listens.
It doesn't matter what your race, faith, politics is, park all at the door.
Once upon a time someone offered the same and saved my life, so it's absolutely my duty to offer the same where I can.
Mens suicide is through the roof, which means a trail of family members often left with a lifetime of hurt, questions and sorrow. Even one person reaching out who wants to stay alive could mean a dozen people not left with that pain.
You don't have put your name or location, but if you're struggling, know someone reads it, and has been there.
Preserve life. Yours.
Stan
@triffic_stuff_@GNev2 The problem with this clip is that this could be any party , take your pick. They all talk shite when pushed on things. That's politics unfortunately.
Even if simply explained, most optical illusions are always mindblowing.
Just stare at the cross at the center. You will see beautiful celebrities turn grotesque.
