Good morning & welcome to Roast Dinner Day
Not every day asks for your best.
Sometimes it simply asks you to keep going. On those days, let โgood enoughโ be something youโre proud of, not something you apologise for.
The democrats no longer support Graham Platner. They cut off this funding, his staff quit, and he was told to resign. See how easy that was, MAGA? Your turn.
USA. A breakfast counter. The waitress recommended the biscuits and gravy, and when the plate arrived, I thought something had gone wrong in the kitchen.
I say this with shame. The dish looked like a construction site after rain. Pale mounds. Gray ladle-fall. Speckles I could not identify.
In my land, the eye eats first. A meal is arranged like a garden. This meal was arranged like weather.
"Is itโฆ finished?" I asked, carefully.
"Honey, that's what it looks like."
The man beside me was already eating his. He did not look up. "Just try it."
I am a man who has charged hillsides at dawn. I raised the fork. I tried it.
I must now formally apologize to the biscuits, the gravy, the waitress, the kitchen, and the entire breakfast tradition of the American South.
It was magnificent. Warm. Peppered. The biscuit drank the gravy the way a field drinks rain โ THAT is why it is shaped like that, you fool โ and every mound I had insulted was a soft fold of comfort that my homeland, in eight hundred years, never once thought to invent.
"Well?" the waitress asked.
"I judged it," I confessed. "By its appearance. I am ashamed."
"Everybody does, hon."
Everybody does. A national dish that forgives you for doubting it. It expects the doubt. It waits for you on the other side of it.
Do not judge the gravy by its face. Judge yourself, for hesitating.
I order it every Saturday now. I no longer see the construction site. I see only the garden.
It was a garden the whole time. The eye must be trained.
To my friends learning Japanese,
There is a Japanese word your textbook will translate as โwaste.โ
That translation is not wrong.
It is just too poor to understand the word.
Mottainai.
A child leaves rice in the bowl.
Mottainai.
Someone throws away a shirt that still has years left in it.
Mottainai.
A convenience store meal expires without anyone opening it.
Mottainai.
A pencil is broken, but still long enough to write with.
Mottainai.
A person has talent, but never uses it.
Mottainai.
It is not just waste.
It is regret.
It is respect.
It is the feeling that something still had value,
and we gave up on it too early.
The feeling is close to:
โThat deserved better.โ
Most languages have words for throwing things away.
Japan has a word for the sadness of letting value disappear.
From pencil to paint.
From wool to watercolour.
From schoolbooks to station walls.
Meownself has been recreated in countless ways, but every version tells the same story:
One cat, loved by many. ๐งก๐
I am so very fortunate, thank you friends ๐งก
The Somerset Farmhouse of 1 North Street, Williton were approached by a "food influencer" that wanted to charge them ยฃ2,000 for a review.
They put out a video of Sally eating a sausage roll instead ๐.
Lets make Sally and the Somerset Farmhouse famous for free.
I've never been at a medical conference where the results have been greeted with a standing ovation

The USDA has kept raccoon rabies out of the central United States for over 30 years by air-dropping fish-flavored ravioli from helicopters.
Each one is a small packet coated in fishmeal with an oral rabies vaccine inside. Raccoons, foxes, coyotes, and skunks find them by smell, bite through, and swallow.
Many animals that consume the bait develop immunity, helping build a protective barrier across populations.
The bait is generally considered safe for pets and tested in many non-target species.
The USDA's Wildlife Services has been running this since 1995. Without the bait program, raccoon rabies very likely would have spread much further west.
A federal program you've probably never heard of is protecting your pets and your kids by feeding wild animals ravioli from a helicopter.
I would say this is probably the greatest joke ever written for the sheer fact of how many times your Dad or Granddad has said this line when an ambulance or Police car goes by with its sirens on
Myth: "I only wear vegan fabrics. Better for the animals, better for the planet."
Let's check in on Doris's annual contribution.
Once a year, in late spring, Doris is sheared. The procedure takes approximately three minutes. Doris does not enjoy it. Doris does not, by any visible measure, suffer from it. Doris is, immediately afterwards, a noticeably more comfortable animal in the British summer.
The fleece weighs approximately 3 kilograms. It is sold to the British Wool Marketing Board for, depending on the year, between ยฃ0.40 and ยฃ2.50 per kilogram. The shearing costs more than the wool fetches. Brian is shearing Doris at a loss.
The wool is then:
- Naturally flame-retardant
- Naturally antibacterial
- Moisture-wicking
- Biodegradable
- Renewable, annually
- Carbon-storing while in use
The replacement, in performance fabrics:
- Polyester
- Polyamide
- Acrylic
- Polypropylene
- All petroleum-derived
- All shedding microplastics on every wash
- All requiring fossil fuel inputs to produce
- All non-biodegradable, with a typical landfill lifespan of 200-500 years
A single wash of a polyester fleece can release up to 700,000 microplastic fibres into the water system. These fibres are now in: every tested water source on earth, every tested human placenta, every tested rainfall sample, the deep ocean, the Arctic ice, and the lungs of marine mammals.
A single wash of a wool jumper releases: nothing. The wool, when eventually disposed of, returns to soil within a few years.
The fabric being marketed as the "ethical" alternative to wool is plastic.
The plastic is "ethical" because nobody has been asked to slaughter the polymer.
The polymer also has not been asked.
Doris, by being a sheep on a fell, is producing the most thoroughly sustainable performance fabric humans have ever made.
Brian is selling it at a loss.
The fashion industry, meanwhile, is selling petroleum at a profit and calling it ethical.
Reject plastic. Wear wool.
Doris is, this morning, growing next year's batch.
