July 11th is a somber date that holds great significance for many. It is the anniversary of the death of Ziba Kazemi, my mother, a Canadian photojournalist known as Zahra Kazemi, who was brutally killed by Iranian government agents in July 2003.

Ziba’s death was a tragic event that shocked the world and sparked widespread outrage. Her killing was a stark reminder of the regime's disregard for human life and its systematic violations of international law. Her killing also exposed the Canadian government's attempts to cover up the Iranian government's involvement in torturing a Canadian citizen to death.

Ziba didn't die on July 10th or 11th; the Iranian government deliberately delayed revealing her death, knowing it would coincide with the anniversary of the 1999 student uprising on July 9th.

July 11th has since become a day of remembrance for Ziba and all those who have lost their lives at the hands of this regime. It serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights and freedom in Iran, and a testament to the bravery and resilience of those who continue to fight for justice and democracy.
