Here’s my final thoughts on this:

The one point not talked about enough here is the officials needing to get a better handle on the games. Neither the cross checks on Kaprizov nor the high stick on Perfetti were called penalties.

And the reason those cross checks happen several times per game is because the NHL and its officials are incompetent when it comes to calling their rule book. What Dillon did, by definition, was an illegal cross check. And trying to play it off that he didn’t know who it was and where specifically he was targeting is a gigantic load of bullshit. Anyone who’s ever laced them up knows that part of your body is one of the least padded areas you have and that a cross check there has serious potential to do damage to and/or injure the lower rib area.

Ask guys like Mark Stone or Zach Parise if they enjoy being cross checked there and if they think it’s a hockey play. The NHL has a serious issue with not calling cross checking often enough. A simple crackdown would stop guys from doing it rather quickly. I guarantee it.

All that said, none of this makes what Hartman did okay. Dillon fought Middleton and answered the bell. I don’t think the Wild should have to take liberties against Jets players because that doesn’t solve anything. It’s gonna create an endless cycle of nastiness resulting in more players getting hurt.

The result here needs to be the refs and league holding themselves to a higher standard and enforcing the rulebook and the players to play hard, but to honor the code and not look to take cheap licks at one another because when the best players in the league are sitting in the press box, that’s bad for the growth of the game.

There’s nothing fun about watching a #mnwild team without $50M worth of its stars and two of them being out because of preventable dirty hits that the league could’ve and should’ve penalized.
