💥🇭🇺🗳️First results of the Hungarian parliamentary elections are in: with 14.72% counted, the opposition leads with mandates nearing a two-thirds majority.

Everything points to Viktor Orbán’s defeat and Péter Magyar becoming Hungary’s next prime minister.

This is what Hungary’s historic, record-turnout election looks like on the ground. People clearly understand the stakes, and the final turnout could exceed 75%. Honestly, nobody really expected such a high turnout even though some pollsters like Medián did provide such numbers.

Hungary’s turnout is BRUTAL: 37.98% by 11am (2022: 22.77%), pointing to 75–80% or more overall. In such a scenario, Orbán’s chances look slim, and it’s unlikely any party beyond Fidesz and Péter Magyar’s Tisza clears the 5% threshold.

Hi, I’m from Poland, and I recently read in the US National Security Strategy about Europe’s supposed “civilizational erasure.”

So I’d like to tell you a bit about European civilization.

🇪🇺We have a more modest GDP, yet we still run a trade surplus with the United States, employ 2.5 times more industrial workers, have a higher export share in GDP, and maintain lower income inequality.

🇪🇺We don’t have a heavily privatized healthcare system, yet our life expectancy at birth is about three years higher, and infant mortality is nearly half that of the US.

🇪🇺We don’t have universal and unconditional access to firearms, yet European cities are far safer: we have clearly lower rates of homicide, violent crime, and car theft.

🇪🇺We don’t design our entire spatial order around a single mode of transport; instead, we build transport systems with a strong role for public transit, including rail.

🇪🇺We don’t have tech giants pumping up stock-market valuations, but we do equip ordinary workers with things like paid monthly vacations, paid sick leave, paid parental leave, and contracts that prevent sudden dismissal.

So let’s ask ourselves:

which of these things truly reflects the kind of civilization we want to pursue?

Last night, the Russian army carried out a second strike on @SOCARofficial oil terminals in the Odesa region. This is no accident – such attacks can be qualified as deliberate strikes against Azerbaijan’s civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. They bear the hallmarks of #WarCrimes. Since #SOCAR is a state-owned company, 🇦🇿 @prokurorluq has the right to initiate criminal proceedings under the principle of extraterritorial jurisdiction. An important step could be the establishment of a joint international investigative team by Ukraine and Azerbaijan to investigate this incident. Should the deliberate nature of the actions be established, this attack may be regarded as an #ActOfAggression. In that case, Azerbaijan could bring the matter before the #UN, citing a violation of UN General Assembly Resolution 3314 (1974) on the Definition of Aggression.
