Today I filed a lawsuit against the state of Arizona, here is why.
Arizona's mail voting system is not a partisan invention. It was created by Republicans in 1991, and for 35 years, voters of every political stripe have relied on it. Today, roughly 80 percent of Arizonans vote by mail, including seniors who are no longer driving, rural voters hours from the nearest polling place, people with disabilities, naturalized citizens, and working families who cannot afford to lose a day's wages standing in line. This system works, which is why I am a proud supporter of Protect the Vote Arizona’s efforts to enshrine our fundamental right to vote in the state’s constitution. There is no crisis here.
But HCR 2001 threatens to unravel all of that. Its voter ID provision demands that every mail voter present "valid government-issued proof of identity" concurrent with casting a ballot, yet provides no mechanism, no process, and no procedure for how a mail voter could possibly comply. That vagueness is not an oversight. It is a blueprint for chaos, one that hands future legislatures the power to define compliance however they choose, under the deliberately lowered "rational basis" constitutional standard that this same measure would write into Arizona's Constitution. Once that provision is in place, courts would be stripped of the authority to strike down even the most restrictive interpretation.
That brings me to the most sobering part of this. I am not sure what is more dangerous, the unintended consequences of HCR 2001, or the very real intended ones. Because when you remove the constitutional guardrails that protect voting rights, when you hand future legislators a vague mandate and a weakened judiciary, and when you package all of it in a measure that voters cannot even untangle and vote on separately, you are not building a more secure election system. You are manufacturing doubt. You are engineering confusion. And you are doing it on the backs of the very voters, think seniors, rural communities, people with disabilities, naturalized citizens, who have the least power to fight back. Not today, not without a fight.
Arizona's elections are free, fair, and accurate. HCR 2001 is not about fixing what is broken. It is about breaking what works with the most nefarious of intentions.
DOJ'S 1️⃣0️⃣TH LOSS: In a major blow to Trump’s effort to seize sensitive voter data, a federal appeals court rejected the DOJ’s attempt to force Michigan to turn over its full voter registration file.
It’s the DOJ’s first appellate defeat — after nine straight district court losses and no wins. https://t.co/vKOFS6YBtn
NEW: Far-right election deniers are escalating lies about the midterms to justify calls for Trump to seize control of the 2026 elections.
They’re openly floating the use of emergency powers, National Guard deployment and call for martial law.

The office of New York Attorney General Letitia James told Democracy Docket it’s reviewing a report on this alarming incident.
Prominent figures on the far right have called for ICE agents to be deployed to polling places in the midterms — a clear effort to intimidate voters.
Hey! @azjustinheap remember last year when you illegally mailed out 86,000 letters and instead of you being a stand up Recorder, you ran, you hid, and you sent a staffer down to face the TV cameras instead?? I do!! So spare us your digs about "unelected bureaucrats"!
NEW EPISODE: A federal judge in Massachusetts just blocked Trump's executive order that would have let him use the Post Office to control who can vote by mail. This is a massive win for democracy — and it's not the only one. https://t.co/hT8xy0Vi0X
❤️ Perry is finally beginning to believe she is safe. ❤️
When we rescued Perry from the abandoned school, she was terrified, unwell, and desperately trying to protect her puppies. We may never know what she endured on the streets or what humans did to make her so afraid.
For days, she refused to eat and needed fluid therapy while our team patiently cared for her.
Today, we finally have some wonderful news.
Perry has started eating... and for the first time, she is responding to gentle human touch. ❤️
She is still shy and frightened, but every small step feels like a huge victory.
Her puppies are happy, playful, and thriving. Now we just need to help Perry heal too.
Please help us continue her treatment, sponsor her sterilisation, or set up a small monthly donation. Recovering animals like Perry need weeks of love, care, and medical support.
If you cannot donate, please follow and share. One share could help another frightened mother find safety.

🚨 The Utah Republican Party paid a petition firm $4.3 million to gather signatures for a ballot measure that would have repealed the state’s anti-gerrymandering protections.
That firm was later accused of submitting fraudulent petition signatures—including signatures attributed to deceased people—and the GOP ultimately terminated the contract.
After thousands of signatures were removed, the ballot measure failed to qualify.
My Latest: When we accept that the president lies, we cheapen the value of truth. When we accept his attacks on Democratic leaders and opposition figures, we destigmatize and thus enable the weaponization of government. https://t.co/6zrUxYKkUv
