My PhD thesis, 'A history of embryonic stem cell research: Concepts, laboratory work, and contexts' is now available online: https://t.co/Z7xyItJ8YA … - comments and discussion welcome!

One of the terms Haeckel coined was “Stemmzelle” (stem cell), and his conceptualisation was important for developmental biology (embryology), evolutionary theories, and hereditary theories.
#OnThisDay in 1834, Ernst Haeckel, zoologist and accomplished artist, was born. He discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology. See some of his amazing art: https://t.co/7kNP9uwnv1
@AJPrincep When I was finishing off my PhD (sci) I completed my MA (hist & phil). I’d always had an interest in history and found I still wanted to pursue it. So I did a second PhD in hist & phil of science, using my knowledge & understanding of biology to inform the project.
@pknoepfler When this was originally posted, I commented that I’d completed a Masters dissertation on @jimtill’s contribution. My PhD thesis, on a more comprehensive history of stem cell research, is now available: https://t.co/hgigeKCicW
As my research expands into new areas (don’t worry, I’m not abandoning stem cell history!), I’m proud to have established a new interdisciplinary network to explore livestock genetics - feel free to have a look around the new website! #histsci#genetics#animalhistory#sts
My essay review (“The History of Stem Cell Research: A Philosophical Review”) is now available! https://t.co/a28wkoMZDc - If anyone doesn’t have access, but would like to read it, please let me know.
@dulib hi, I’ve been trying to search the catalogue / use discover all morning, but eventually just get a message saying the server stopped responding. Is it just me or is there a known issue? Thanks!
At the end of May I’m travelling to @UU_University to take part in a workshop: Research Ethics Committees – Origins, Development and Beyond. I’ll be talking about the role #research#ethics committees had during the 1990s, and when human embryonic #stemcells were isolated.
The full programme is now available for “Approaches to Genetics for Livestock Research” at @IASH_Edinburgh on 24 May. Will be of interest to those involved in genetics and history of farming or applied science! https://t.co/tsmTQU8TGA #histsci#histbio#genetics#livestock#STS
I’ve just add a few small updates to my website, so feel free to have a look around if you’d like to see what I’ve been up to, and what I have planned for the rest of 2019!

Of course I don’t expect everyone to know stem cell history in great detail, but if you’re writing a paper that includes some discussion on stem cell history, a quick online search will provide some (much needed) accurate information.
I’ve already found a paper that’s made me grumpy this morning. Apparently stem cell research was originally developed in the USA (no), and “stem cell research has been around nearly as long as there have been microscopes with with to observe stem cells” (also no). 😬😬
Today I’m working on my book proposal-finally getting around to turning my thesis into a book. My examiners were extremely helpful with some hints and tips, but I needed some time away from it first to really help me see how the book will differ from the thesis. #histsci#histSTM
