Last week, the Indian government announced a giant deal with multiple publishers that will allow an estimated 18 million students, faculty, and researchers free access to nearly 13,000 journals, including some top-tier ones, through a single portal. https://t.co/aXwmkOyyNW
"For decades, the fossil fuel industry has leveraged its lobbying resources, privileged access to policy makers, and unique structural importance in economies to prevent government action on critical climate and environment-related issues".

Last week, Canada lost a powerhouse in cancer research.
Dr Philip Branton was a highly accomplished cancer virologist, whose decades of work helped shape our understanding of viruses and tumour suppression and led to new treatments that continue to be used today.
Dr Branton was also so much more than a cancer researcher – he was a lifelong champion for collaboration as the pathway for stronger and more impactful science. Through his work to establish the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Cancer Research, the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance and more, Dr Branton united the research community to set shared visions and strategies to strengthen our country’s cancer ecosystem.
The Canadian Cancer Society was fortunate to work with Dr Branton in many capacities over the years, from supporting his research with multiple grants, to collaborating with him as a board member for the National Cancer Institute of Canada (the research arm of CCS for many years), to celebrating his many accomplishments, including the R.M. Taylor Medal in 2005.
Dr Branton has shaped what cancer research is in Canada today. We honour his contributions and his legacy. He will be missed.

An excerpt from the Abstract: "These functionally defined, multipotent CD34+ hematopoietic cells, designated iPS cell-derived HSCs (iHSCs), produced levels of engraftment similar to those achieved following umbilical cord blood transplantation".
Two things have been on my mind regarding Bernie Sanders’ #LongCovidMoonshot bill that’s just been introduced.
1. How long could this take to get passed?
2. Aside from calling our representatives, what can we do to help this get passed?

Barbara McClintock graciously and enthusiastically described her novel work to me. What a charming, down-to-earth person she was (in addition to being an remarkably innovative and dedicated scientist).
When a graduate student at Yale (1954-56), I had an opportunity to visit Cold Spring Harbor and meet some future Nobel recipients (including Hershey and Watson). I also had the good fortune to meet Barbara McClintock.
How much do you know about the trailblazing scientist Barbara McClintock?
McClintock's pioneering research was rejected by the scientific community but she didn't give up. Watch our video to learn more about this remarkable laureate who was born on this day 122 years ago.
Here's another troubling example of how bad Google AI Overviews can be. This overview on stem cells for knees is like an ad for unproven stem cell clinics & here again Google uses unproven clinics as its primary sources. Fact- there is no good evidence that stem cells help knees.
My daughter (age 59) has #LongCovid. She can't cope with long reports about LC. So, I send her excerpts. E.g. I've selected quotes about treatments from Dr. Topol's edifying interview of Dr. Blitshteyn. They've been posted to Tribel and to COVID Long-Haulers Support Group Canada.
Pearls on #dysautonomia, #LongCovid, #POTS from a leading expert on the front lines, Dr. Svetlana Blitshteyn

Interesting, Jim. I looked for my own entry.
My own discipline is shown as "Physics". This once was correct. My highest ranking in a Specialty is in "cell physiology", at 104 (yawn).

Climate experts were increasingly saying that keeping heating below 1.5C is near impossible, yet it remains the global goal. So I asked hundreds of top IPCC scientists what they thought. What they said shocked even me…

The author Brad Hayes "is president of Petrel Robertson Consulting Ltd., a geoscience consulting firm addressing technical and strategic issues around oil and gas development ... and carbon sequestration".
Doctor of geology Brad Hayes’ article about understanding climate science discusses important concepts that are absent from almost all news media channels and many environmental science classrooms.
