This is a great example of how difficult it can be to deal with survey's and identification of lower end tornadoes. @NWSNewOrleans did a superb job with dissemination of warnings when these occured. @StephanieAbrams and I were on air as a lot of this went down. Many of these had flooding associated with the tornadic storm clusters. 14 tornadoes is more than the state of Louisiana averages for the months of May and June combined!

Illinois has ALREADY crushed their state record for the number of tornadoes in one year. The old record was 142 (2024) and this year we are approaching 200 tornadoes after this weekends spinners. Illinois has seen more tornadoes than any other state since 2015 according to an article from @nbcchicago late last week. It’s the third time in the last four years Illinois has led the country in tornadoes.

TX holds the record for the most tornadoes in a single year with 244 back in 2015. That data set goes back to 1950. Phones and a sprawling population certainly allow us to miss very little these days. No one knows where the rest of the year goes in IL

After a very low tornado count in May, June has brought us back above average for 2026 nationally.

Heartbreaking scenes out of Effingham County, IL this morning. 💔

As first light broke, drone footage reveal the true, devastating extent of the storms that ripped through our area Wednesday evening. The path of destruction is staggering.

Here is what the view from above shows:

Homes Leveled: Several residences have been completely flattened into piles of debris, while others have had their roofs and top floors entirely sheared off.

Vehicles Tossed: The sheer power of the wind flipped heavy pickup trucks, cars, and trailers, scattering them like toys into fields and yards.

Widespread Destruction:

Outbuildings and agricultural structures have been shredded, with metal siding peeled away and debris strewn across hundreds of yards of farmland.

Shattered Tree Lines: Entire groves of trees have been snapped in half or completely uprooted.

Please keep the families and first responders in your thoughts and prayers today as the long road to assessment and recovery begins.

If you are out in the affected areas, please stay safe, watch for downed power lines, and give emergency crews the space they need to work.

Insta360 footage captured a close-range, rain-wrapped wedge tornado with multi-vortex structure near Mattoon, Illinois, on June 17th, 2026. The tornado was difficult to see at times due to heavy rain wrapping around the circulation, but the video shows intense motion and a dangerous close-range view of the storm.
