⛔️ عندما يسمع بعض الناس أن درجة الحرارة في باريس بلغت 44 درجة مئوية، يأخذون الأمر بنوع من السخرية و يستهينون بالرقم المسجل..

عشت 44 درجة في باريس هذا الشهر ، و من قبل جربت 50 في مراكش و50 في دبي… وهذا هو الفرق الحقيقي، وأيهما كان الأصعب ؟

في مراكش مثلا، و حين تلامس الحرارة 50 درجة، فإن المناخ الجاف يجعل الجسم يتعرق بسهولة، فيتبخر العرق بسرعة ويمنح شعورًا نسبيًا بالتخفيف، خاصة إذا كنت في الظل.

نعم، الجو في صيف مراكش حارق، لكن السكان والبنية التحتية و طبيعة البناء و تركيبته معتادون على هذا النوع من الطقس،المنازل القديمة في المدينة العتيقة مثلا مبنية بجدران طينية وفناءات داخلية (الرياض) صممت أصلًا لتبريد الهواء طبيعيًا، والناس يعرفون كيف يتجنبون ساعات الذروة بين الثانية والخامسة عصرًا.

أما في دبي، فالحرارة قد تصل أيضًا إلى 50 درجة، لكن الرطوبة العالية في منطقة صحراوية تجعل التجربة مختلفة تمامًا…

تتراوح نسبة الرطوبة في فصل الصيف بين 60% و100%، وهذا يعني أن مؤشر الحرارة المحسوسة قد يتجاوز الرقم الفعلي بعدة درجات.

بمجرد أن تخرج إلى الشارع في دبي تشعر وكأنك دخلت غرفة بخار، فالعرق لا يتبخر بسهولة، ويصبح التنفس أثقل..ومع ذلك، فإن الحياة هناك تعتمد بشكل كبير على التكييف، سواء في المنازل أو السيارات أو المراكز التجارية أو حتى الممرات الخارجية المكيفة في بعض المناطق، مما يجعل التعرض الفعلي للحر قصيرًا ومحدودًا في الغالب.

لكن المفاجأة كانت باريس…

صحيح أن الحرارة لم تتجاوز 44 درجة، لكنها كانت بالنسبة لي الأصعب…لماذا؟

لأن المدينة ليست مهيأة لمثل هذه الموجات، كثير من المنازل، خاصة في المباني القديمة من القرن التاسع عشر، لا تحتوي على مكيفات أصلًا، نسبة انتشار التكييف في المنازل الفرنسية لا تتجاوز 7 في المائة، أي لا تزال متواضعة جدا مقارنة بدول الخليج.

وسائل النقل تحت الأرض والمباني الحجرية القديمة تحتفظ بالحرارة لساعات طويلة، كما أن السكان غير معتادين على درجات حرارة استثنائية بهذا الشكل، لا سلوكيًا ولا جسديًا.

في الليل أيضًا لا تنخفض الحرارة بالقدر الكافي، فتتحول المنازل المسلحة جدرانها بالإسمنت و الحجارة و الصوف ضد البرد إلى أفران يصعب النوم داخلها، وهذا تحديدًا ما تحذر منه السلطات الصحية الفرنسية، حيث تكون الليالي الحارة المتكر��ة من أخطر عوامل الإجهاد الحراري على الجسم، لأنها لا تمنحه فرصة للتعافي.

لهذا السبب، أستطيع القول إن 44 درجة في باريس أشد قسوة من 50 درجة في مدن اعتادت على الحر..

الإحساس بالطقس لا تحدده درجة الحرارة فقط، بل تلعب الرطوبة، وسرعة الرياح، والبنية التحتية، وطريقة تصميم المدن والمباني، ومدى استعداد السكان جسديًا وسلوكيًا، دورًا كبيرًا في جعل الحرارة محتملة أو خانقة.

في النهاية، تعلمت أن مقارنة حرارة المدن بالأرقام وحدها خطأ شائع. فالحرارة ليست مجرد رقم يظهر على شاشة الهاتف، بل تجربة يعيشها الإنسان بكل تفاصيلها.

ومن واقع تجربتي الشخصية، كانت موجة الحر في باريس هي الأكثر إرهاقًا، رغم أنها سجلت درجات أقل من مراكش ودبي.

In most years, the biggest US weather killer is not hurricanes, tornadoes, floods or lightning. It is extreme heat. Too many people think they are capable of handling the heat - when they are not.

Have weather forecasts seemed less accurate lately? There's a major contributing factor: nearly half the morning weather balloons in the Lower 48 are "missing."

This is an ongoing crisis that is degrading critical severe weather forecasts that we all rely on. It's having real, tangible impacts on degrading forecast quality.

If you work in transportation, agriculture or commerce, this should matter to you.

Regardless of the causes, this negatively affects people of ALL political backgrounds. Weather affects everyone. And it's impacting ALL of us negatively.

We can't look at weather balloon data that doesn't exist. We can't pump nonexistent data into models. We can't rely as heavily on models that don't "know" what's happening above our heads.

This is especially concerning for severe weather forecasts. We can't go 18 hours without ascertaining how the atmosphere is layered, how much storm fuel has built up and if severe thunderstorms are going to erupt. The Storm Prediction Center has even acknowledged forecasting frustrations in at least one public bulletin.

As an atmospheric scientist myself, I can say firsthand – the forecasts I'm able to offer you are less accurate than they would otherwise be. I'm not able to predict severe weather with the confidence I normally would. That is extremely concerning.

The United States is "supposed" to launch balloons at 0Z and 12Z ideally – a.k.a. around 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern time. That's not happening. Many sites, due to staffing issues stemming from broader political and organizational issues, have pushed to 18Z, or early afternoon. That's not helpful for morning severe weather forecasts. In other words, you get less lead time. Less advanced notice. Quicker ramp-ups and ramp-downs to the forecast.

We're not able to get jet stream, temperature, moisture or wind profiles of the atmosphere each morning like we otherwise would.

Moreover, the World Meteorological Organization encourages 12Z soundings; that data is shared via the Global Observing System (GOS) under the World Weather Watch (WWW). That's not happening.

One thing I've seen people misunderstand: this isn't just a problem for the areas missing balloon launches. Those observations help initialize the forecast models, and any missing data can degrade forecasts far downstream as the model evolves. If you're in Ohio, you should care just as much about a missed launch in Montana as someone who lives there.

A tornado/storm photograph being posted online does not make it public property. If you screenshot someone’s work and turn it into a canvas because you do not want to pay for the print, that is still taking someone’s work without permission.

Storm photography is expensive, time consuming, and often physically risky to create. You are not just paying for ink and canvas, you are paying for the years of skill, forecasting, travel, gear, editing, and the actual moment they captured.

If someone’s work is worth stealing because it looks good in your house, that is usually proof it was worth paying for, and the photographer deserves to be compensated for it.

Support your peers in this space. Reach out to them because I don’t see anyone selling an 8x10 for $500.
