‘when philosophy paints its grey in grey, then has a shape of life grown old. . . The owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the coming of the dusk.’
@flobberchops@DalrympleWill “Something that happened.” Actually, very many things “happen”, and when you single out some “happenings” and ignore the many more worse “happenings”, because of their nationality, it is racism and bigotry.
This is not really the best place to mark the passing of Andrew Shanks, but it certainly needs marking, as, IMHO, his understanding of Christianity is vitally important for the world we live in.

@DefendOurJuries I don’t think that they care if they are arresting people for ludicrous things, it can still have an intimidating effect that might stop people from coming out and protesting. This is probably their goal.
@paulmasonnews And, lastly, there are alternative strategies for de-escalation that the govt., under the guise of ‘realism’, shows no interest in pursuing. It is a ‘realism’ that leads in only one direction, and not a good one.
@LazyC31@EdwardGLuce@elonmusk Yes, because what humanity desperately needs is autonomous cars, spaceships and an internet controlled by people who want to control us.
Perhaps the most debilitating characteristic of humanity - serving to generate an inhumane world - is the pronounced tendency, in early and later life, to develop quite closed pathways of thinking, and emotionally responding, that we habitually stick to, and rarely stray from.
@owenjonesjourno There are many reasons why people vote for Reform - among them cynicism and prejudice - but ultimately it is a culture that destroys learning, as in, to “get knowledge, be cultivated; study, read, think about”. Any hope must reside in reversing this.
I often wonder why I bother to post on here. I think it is because, faced with every day bringing fresh, and ever increasing, evidence of how sick our world is, and how little resistance there is to this, it acts as a small release valve to prevent my brain from exploding.
I swear I no longer understand this world. How can a child under three years old be asleep in his bed, only for a missile to strike him and end his life? How did a child’s bed, the place meant to protect him, become the place where he dies?
This mother had already lost three of her children in a previous strike on their home in Gaza. After months of pain, Zaid came into her life as her last hope. He was not just a child; he was the reason she tried to keep going after losing so much.
But even Zaid was not spared. Last night, a missile struck him while he was sleeping. He did not know fear, he did not understand what was happening. He was only a child in his bed… and then he was gone.
He was only three years old. The world sees this and stays silent. If Zaid had been born somewhere else, his name would be everywhere. But he was born in Gaza, so he became another number.
What kind of world sees a child killed while sleeping and does nothing?
