Dipping back into #explainability of #algorithmicdecisions: H-Unique is being developed to ID hands in images of abuse, with a “white-box” #algorithm to explain decisions in court. Incredible stuff. Meet the baroness catching paedophiles red-handed (£) https://t.co/JOW97RGHuL
This week, the automation of poverty is being brought on to the world stage in an investigative global series by the Guardian. At the heart of all the cases they highlight, is a lack of accountability or public debate around the use of algorithms in decision making.
New set of articles on different types of #gendered#inequality in society, building the evidence base and suggesting solutions for national and regional policymakers to draw on. Brilliant piece of work by @UoMPolicy https://t.co/rOa8xN6QTa
"If you got a group of misogynists in a room and said how can we make this system work for men and not for women, they would not have come up with too many ideas that are not already in place." On #Gender looks at how to get more women into policymaking. https://t.co/UGxsuZIYYm
Has anyone seen how @WMPolice’s predictive model works? Without detail - like what they know about people and factor in, how that‘s thought to relate to criminality - how do we know how good it is? ‘Minority Report’ plan to spot criminals condemned https://t.co/2a7yt7kmaY
Dear @sueperkins, My mum got me #EastofCroydon for Christmas. I’m loving it so far but in chapter 5 I realised I’d love it *even* more if it had a map to trace your travels. Is it too late to add one before the paperback is printed? Merry Christmas and happy new year! Steph
@la_gaia Congrats Gaia! I’d love to chat to you about what we’re doing at @senseaboutsci to equip and empower the public when it comes to data and algorithms in decision-making
#DataProtection, #privacy and legality of data processing for predictive purposes are all legitimate concerns. But society also needs algorithmic decision-making models to be opened up to #scrutiny and public discussion about how they make decisions that affect our lives. /ENDS
About the @guardian exclusive (and subsequent reports) on #algorithms being used by 5 councils to predict child abuse: where are the questions about how those algorithms are designed in the first place? https://t.co/ytlVw4wd7w /1
This isn’t just about journalists (though they really should be asking these productive questions). Where are the the organisations, centres, committees set up to lead on “ethical use of data”? They should be asking questions too. /6
