The South African government claims that GBV can’t be declared a national disaster because there are frameworks that have been put in place to counteract GBV and femicide. The SAME frameworks have not produced any results, but instead, we see cases of GBV rise by the day.

Bongiwe ‘Norhi’ Ndzuzo, 31, was allegedly shot to death in Mfuleni, Cape Town, on 12 October 2025.

Bongiwe was on her way to work when she was shot more than ten times by an unknown person, who took none of her belongings. She succumbed to her severe injuries at the scene. To date, no arrests have been made. How many more lives must be taken before Gender-Based Violence and Femicide are finally declared a National Disaster?
