Yes, I am giving away a set of Goosebumps Books 1-12 with the original covers. SO MANY responses I've decided to give away THREE sets instead of one. Easy to win. Just retweet this tweet. Winners picked at random. @RL_Stine
I agree that teens need to be educated on this because sharing certain posts can lead to serious repercussions. YA Librarians should begin to add books about social media safety to the collection. They can also dedicate a display to advertise the books.
Takeaway 5 #gslis777 Teens are not always aware of the down side of social media and how to set their privacy setting correctly. They need to be made aware of how much information they share with the world when they lack this knowledge.
Informing teens of what the library has to offer is so important. I think about teens that don’t know that some library's offer hotspots. Computer usage is limited in the library, and the hotspot will allow teens to have access to the internet at home.
I find this added caveat to be ridiculous. There is also no need to justify adult programs. People will argue against a teen video game program, but bingo for adults is acceptable.
This addresses one of my final takeaways of finding balance when creating relationships with teens. Your suggestion is excellent! I do believe responding to teens with respect, but still being authoritative can lead to appropriate interactions.
Takeaway #gslis777m1 section 1.3. Whether good or bad, teens often crave attention. It’s up to a librarian to maintain order through appropriate interaction. Twisting an arm is not the best way to gain respect, empathy and understanding with a splash of authority is. #gslis777
Librarians should also work to create a relationship with school staff. The benefits of such a relationship could lead to higher program attendance and new teen patrons because they can get permission to conduct outreach during assemblies or designated class visits.
5. Karen Jensen’s article discussed the importance of getting teens involved. It can make them feel like it is their library rather than just a library. It is a way to build loyalty. #gslis777
#GSLIS777M4S2 1. The easiest way for librarians to begin building relationships with teens is talking to them! Librarians can learn about their interests, what books they like, or what programs that they would like to attend.
4. Terrile’s article about teen behavior was interesting and informative. Teen behavior can be caused by different factors including problems at home. However, peer pressure and the need to act cool can also influence behavior. #gslis777
I do agree that we shouldn’t be friends with teens while they are old enough to be in the teen spaces. However, when teens age out, I don’t think it is a problem to be friends with them.
@reneereads@MichaelBuono@TheBeardedBook I don't think we can ever be considered friends with our teen populations. However, we can be friendly and caring. We are in essence mentors, authority figures, and advocates and supporters of teens. #777f2017
