The answers to many questions about earthquakes may be found through observation of the mantle, but we can’t reach it. The Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia reached 7.5 miles before the 356F/180C conditions led engineers to call it a day only halfway to the destination.

The soft soils that cause the Tower to lean allow it to survive earthquakes. Seismic waves lap against and around the Tower but with minimal shaking to the tower itself. Were these soils stiffer, the Tower wouldn’t lean, but it also wouldn’t have stood thru 4 major quakes. #pisa

After a big earthquake, your car isn’t going anywhere for more reasons than I can even list. Your bike, on the other hand, is a solid means of post-event transportation. One more good reason to be a bike commuter.
