It is with a heavy heart that I have today informed my whip and decided for now to no longer take the @Conservatives whip.
This is a sad day for me.
I am a Conservative and remain so but sadly the current Party are far removed from the Party I joined and served in Cabinet.
My decision is a reflection of how far right my Party has moved and the hypocrisy and double standards in its treatment of different communities.
A timely reminder of the issues that I raise in my book Muslims Don’t Matter
Dear @bbcnickrobinson
Pensioners are NOT the “wartime generation”.
I am 71 and born in 1952 - 7 years after the end of the war.
If you are 65 now, you were born 14 years after the war.
You’d have to be 79 now to have been born during the war.
Naomi Campbell banned from being charity trustee. Campbell disqualified for 5 yrs after a Charity Commission inquiry found Fashion For Relief passed on only a tiny fraction of the millions it raised from star-studded celebrity fashion events to good causes https://t.co/I16r7H4jKE
The world must take concrete action to end the violations of women's rights in Afghanistan.
Over the past three years, the systematic and widespread violations of women’s rights by the Taliban in Afghanistan have become one of the most blatant examples of disregard for human rights. The Taliban, fully aware of the inadequate responses from the international community, have continuously trampled upon fundamental human values, facing only verbal threats and ineffectual pleas.
Now, with countries such as Germany, Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands calling for the Taliban to be held accountable in international courts and threatening them with prosecution for their crimes, it is imperative to stress that while these are positive and necessary steps, threats alone are insufficient. The world must demonstrate that the era of inaction is over.
It is time for the international community to take concrete and effective steps to uphold its commitment to human rights and prove that the ongoing violations of women’s rights and the trampling of their human dignity cannot continue unchecked.
Failure to respond decisively to these blatant violations is tantamount to a negligent acceptance of them. History will judge, and harshly so, those who turned a blind eye to such oppression.
We call on all governments, international organizations, and human rights bodies to take specific actions to hold the Taliban accountable for their gross crimes against women and humanity. Today, more than ever, there is a need for justice and human rights to be enforced not just in words but in deeds. Referring the Taliban to international courts is only one of the many necessary steps to prevent the ongoing violations of women’s rights in Afghanistan.
The global community must stand firm on this clear and strong message: violations of human rights, especially women’s rights, will not go unanswered. Justice will not remain a mere promise, and the fight for justice and women’s rights is a global duty. Any neglect in this regard is a betrayal of fundamental human values and human rights. Undoubtedly, history will judge the world’s response to this critical moment with precision and ruthlessness.

There is a very real danger that we will move on from this news and not absorb its true horror. This tragedy is important. It tells us exactly who we are currently failing and something we are about to see a lot more of. https://t.co/vhQFltZkuI

We’re not opposing Starmer on welfare and benefits because we’re ‘not giving Labour a chance.’ We’re opposing him because he hasn’t shown a single sign of changing the harsh, evidence-free sanctions regime that’s contributed to the untimely deaths of many people we care about.
This morning, while touring TV & Radio news studios, Jeffrey Archer - a man once convicted and imprisoned for perverting the course of justice - was asked to pontificate about Keir Starmer’s integrity.
I will not be gagged on a point of principle. And I am not prepared to play games behind closed doors.
If @RishiSunak s Party wants to retry and replay the #coconuttrial despite the acquittal of #MariehaHussain , the clear legal findings and the overwhelming expert witness testimonies then I wish to do so publicly and transparently.
It would be unfair to do this whilst continuing to take the @Conservatives whip.
I realise I have the priviledge of platform and I have decided to exercise that privilege by speaking truth to power.
Please ask this repeatedly of Starmer and Labour:
- Why are you not getting rid of sanctions?
- There is no evidence they work. Even the national audit office say so.
- There is evidence that they contribute to increased food bank usage, worse mental health and premature death.
Hi @UKLabour there is something I need to get off my chest , the disabled community are literally living in fear at the moment , is it climate change or war ? No it’s the panic that come October the budget will absolutely be coming for us !. We worry everyday about our conditions we should not be worried about being spied on or taking our benefits away especially when mps are living in luxury! You say you care but you don’t do you ? You’re already going to kill off pensioners I guess we are next ?@Keir_Starmer@RachelReevesMP@AngelaRayner
@AdamRutherford Prior to the pandemic our politics was hit by a separate plague - that of Boris Johnson & his cabinet’s baseless sense of exceptionalism - it made what Kevin, his colleagues, and patients experienced even more wretched than it needed to be.
This makes me so angry. I’ve known Kev since I was 18, and I’ve never seen him like this. I don’t believe in hell, but these medics and carers were in it, and the bastards who made light of this plague, denied it, called it a flu, and made it worse for everyone, you deserve it.
This is such powerful testimony to the horrors the NHS faced when dealing with Covid. As @RoryStewartUK and I discussed on @RestIsPolitics it seems strange how little coverage the Covid inquiry is getting these days but surely this will. @JimDown8 book and his accounts at the time echo so strongly
The Disability Price Tag must come down! Disabled households need an extra £1,010 EVERY MONTH just to have the same standard of living as non-disabled households.
@scope are calling on the government to tackle this in the Budget. Join us! Email your MP.
