@YIMBY_Princeton Sure but just weird imo to include this in your otherwise pretty informative thread. I don’t see how reinforcing stereotypes helps anything/anyone, and it sort of taints the whole thread.
@DotaHype @YIMBY_Princeton I think it’s an approximation used because the USA doesn’t have a well-understood way to refer to denser high-rise suburbs (as they don’t really exist here at scale).
The way things work:
Someone proposes expanded highway, planners order studies, enviro reviews find no impact, government cuts a check for eleventy bazillion dollars, gets built
Someone proposes a bike lane, planners order studies, don't like the results, order more studies
What happens if we don't #SaveTransit? Here's what downtown San Francisco would look like if the 50,000 people who currently BART in each day had to drive and park downtown instead.
50,000 cars = almost an entire square mile of parking
@Spottnik @RB_Hampton @seattledot 15th and Market are both terrible. They havent been adapted enough to density: stroady aspects remain, but now there’s tons of housing. I hope that we’re close to a critical mass of residents where one day soon we’ll get organized and unblock whatever’s preventing change!
One time I had a renovation project where I was dealing w/ more sexism than I'd experienced in a looong time. Pretty relentless condescension, mansplaining, and rudeness, all from the lead guy onsite.
Then I talked to another dude onsite; he was getting treated similarly. 1/
Side thought but one cool colonial move was using some random british navy guy’s name for an absolutely awesome, beautiful mountain, and then using the mountain’s native name for what turned out to become a pretty mediocre satellite city (and an unrelated truck). Soooo insulting.
@amonthei Thanks for this very informative thread. Clearly people need to prepare but I hope we find new approaches to fire management as well, because 4+ million people breathing smoke for weeks at a time isn’t tenable from a public health or political perspective.
@ID_AA_Carmack Leaf blowers are also terrible because they spread tons of dust around, dust that can contain pollen, mold, pesticides, animal feces, etc…
@dongho_chang Hey this is where I live! Would love to see a “half roundabout” there, a planted bulbout where the metal railing is. Going in the neighborhood intersections get smaller anyway so this wouldn’t really impede anything, but it would calm traffic and beautify 🤩
@SpewanMcGregor must be doable but yeah my xp of these things isn’t one of mutual love. scheduling def’ overcomplicated… wonder if a natural language mode is the solution? someone could just say: around christmas all alerts go to aaron & the contents is just “jingle bells!?!?” — and voila 🥂
@JaMikeyMike@resnikoff 100% the biggest issue for me in Ballard, Seattle. Neighborhood relatively calm traffic wise, businesses and restaurants at <10m biking distance, the real sweet spot. But no secure parking anywhere.
