@figg_bethany This reminds me of a high school teacher talking about using Twitter to communicate with students. While it seemed to be working, the teacher commented on how once adults start using a social platform the students find something else to use.
@SManacek Having heard stories of so many messages in emails being misunderstood because people didn't understand the tone of the writer, I wonder if the use of Emojis has helped with this? :)
@pre14cious All three! Especially with the experience that is going on now, some memes are conveying a message and informing others while others are giving us a much-needed laugh.
I never thought of fan fiction as a new literacy but this article discusses studies about how it can encourage people to write and improve technology skills. #Knobel#edu800spring20
Schools need to find a way to address students’ creativity and understand that not everyone learns in the same way or needs to know the same things. #Knobel#edu800spring20
How are schools preparing teachers for their role changes in new literacy? Are the courses offered to teachers enough to keep them current with the changes? #edu800spring20#Leu
“We think it more appropriate to define literacy today as a continuous construct, one that is continuously changing.” This definition also applies to research in education technology. #edu800spring20#Leu
Understanding that today’s students are digital natives, I always assumed this meant proficient in all areas of Internet navigation. This article suggests that students lack knowledge of online researching and evaluation of online info. #edu800spring20#Leu
Has standardized testing in reading evolved to include skills needed for online reading? Self-monitoring, collaborative writing, etc. #Mills#edu800spring20
Mills’ review of new literacies identified less access to digital practices in socioeconomically disadvantaged homes. This point seems relevant now in school districts’ ability to provide or not provide online learning due to school closures. #Mills#edu800spring20
Mills discusses the benefits of peer collaboration online but does not address the drawbacks of interacting with peers online (cyberbullying, decreased mental health due to social media use). This could be due to a lack of research in these areas in 2010. #Mills#edu800spring20
How do we improve inferential reading? So many students struggle with this concept but this study discussed how important inferential reading is to understanding the printed text and reading online. #edu800spring20#Coiro
Before reading studies like this & Shapiro & Niederhauser, 2004, I never considered that reading on the Internet was more complex than reading printed text. #edu800spring20#Coiro
Corio & Dobler thought a lot about how to make this study valid: the use of standardized tests, grades, and interviews to identify skilled readers & the use of several middle school teachers to determine if the chosen website as appropriate for 6th graders. #edu800spring20#Coiro
