The Black Gate scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, featuring Aragorn’s speech, was filmed in a former New Zealand Army training area, and there were still unexploded bombs and military ammunition scattered across the site.
The army had marked out a safe area for the cast and crew, but while delivering Aragorn’s speech, Viggo Mortensen got so caught up in the moment that he rode his horse outside the designated safe zone.
For a few seconds, the entire crew could only watch and hope he didn’t ride over unexploded ordnance.
Thankfully, nothing happened - but it definitely made for a much more dangerous take than anyone had planned.
