Deeply disturbed by the news coming from across the LoC. The killing of more than a dozen protesting civilians and police personnel is extremely sad. The Government there should know better than to use force to handle public grievance and demands in this manner.
When people take to the streets to express their concerns, it is a signal that they seek to be heard. It is the responsibility of those in authority to listen, engage and peacefully resolve the matter, rather than allow it to escalate into violence, arbitrary arrests and loss of life.
Hope and pray that better sense prevails and the matter is handled with maturity while addressing the concerns of the people.

Pakistan is a major regional power and an important partner for the EU.

Today in Islamabad, I met with Prime Minister @CMShehbaz and Deputy PM and Foreign Minister @MIshaqDar50 for talks on further strengthening EU–Pakistan ties. I also met Chief of Defence Forces Syed Asim Munir in the Army HQ in Rawalpindi.

I commended Pakistan for its key role in facilitating US-Iran talks.

The death of a 70-year-old man identified as Zaheer Shaikh after being taken into police custody has triggered serious protests.

According to reports and claims made by family members and activists, Zaheer Shaikh had been arrested in connection with a case involving alleged possession of beef.

Family members have said that Zaheer was subjected to custodial violence, including physical assault, and claimed he named certain police personnel before his death while undergoing treatment at SVP Hospital in Ahmedabad.
