There is no going back. We won't stop fighting for clean air to breathe.
It is time for leadership that is more concerned with the health of people than the health of polluters' profits.
#denythepermit#stopgeneraliron
For South Side residents, the fight for environmental justice is far from over:
It took over three years of community organizing to get the city to deny General Iron’s relocation permit. Community members are still fighting environmental racism today.

Through your leadership & determination - the impossible was made possible and the permit was denied.
People are more important than a polluter's profits.
We will continue the fight until justice prevails.
General Iron’s ownership is continuing to pressure the city to grant them an operating permit despite the fact that it was denied one year ago. Southeast Side community members did not starve themselves and put their bodies on the line to have this polluter force their way in!
General Iron/RMG had a lot of help in this scheme. How & why did @JBPritzker & @ILEPA give them a state permit despite the community's pleas?
GI/RMG are bad actors and state leaders should have held them accountable, not offered help. #endsacrificezones

Denying their pollution permit was a necessity.
Now hold GI/RMG accountable for their actions, including harassing health inspectors & conducting operations without a permit.
These companies do not belong anywhere in Chicago.

People are more important than pollution. General Iron/RMG is a disreputable operator. Their desire to pollute is putting critical programs to help provide affordable housing, help victims of domestic violence, and other programs at risk. #stopgeneraliron

People are more important than profits from pollution.
@EPAMichaelRegan heard our community's pleas for clean air to breathe & saw our fight against proven polluter General Iron/RMG.
Thanks to @POTUS & champions like @RepChuyGarcia - communities like ours - have a new ally.
⬇ Remember, our fight isn’t over. Our leaders must stand with the people, not polluters like General Iron/RMG.
We must stay vigilant. This company makes millions from its polluting ways, and they will not stop - so neither can we.

Our struggle on Chicago's SE side is part of national fight for justice & clean air to breathe for all.
Thanks to @RepChuyGarcia & @NRDems for their leadership. They stand with the people, not polluters.
Let's keep making history. #stopgeneraliron
Yesterday in the @NRDems markup I spoke about the importance of the Environmental Justice for All Act and how it would stop polluters from entering communities already overwhelmed with environmental and health issues.
Teachers who inspired students to fight for their civil rights to have clean air to breathe are being threatened with termination.
These teachers belong in Chicago, General Iron/RMG does not. #stopgeneraliron

For our city to heal, we need action to address health threats wherever they are - no matter the size.
Lead paint chips are falling off this viaduct.
RMG's southside facility has lead all over & trucks spread its toxic residue across the city.

Chronic polluters like General Iron/RMG have been put on notice.
From @CNN "I like to say that environmental justice and health equity are inextricably linked. If you find an environmental justice issue, you're going to inevitably find a health issue."

Their appeal is STUPID. General Iron/RMG's track record demonstrated they are a threat.
@chicagosmayor's denial letter:
Non-permitted activities
EPA violations
Building collapse w/ asbestos
Failure to control dust
High lead levels
Harassing CDPH inspectors
& more
#denythepermit
General Iron doesn't get it. @chicagosmayor protecting the public's health isn't politics, it's leadership.
Remember General Iron repeatedly broke environmental rules & regulations, & RMG harassed health inspectors on site! #denythepermit@Suntimes: https://t.co/acpzvcTuMZ
This @SouthSideWeekly is a good reminder. We fought. We marched. We organized. The permit was denied, but the fight is not over.
General Iron's appeal is pending. They really want a pollution permit.
Stay vigilant & together we will #stopgeneraliron!

Having clean air to breathe is a fundamental civil right. @LoriLightfoot inherited this pollution. Each decision she makes, like denying General Iron's permit, is an opportunity to help our city heal.
Read this important work from @Suntimes & @WBEZ: https://t.co/G5N3CIKNpO
We are forever grateful that @EPAMichaelRegan, @EPAEnvJustice, & @EPAGreatLakes stepped in to help @chicagosmayor step back and look at cumulative impact.
General Iron/RMMG won't stop, so neither will we. They do not belong anywhere in Chicago.
#denythepermit
Can’t make this up. RMG shows up in Cleveland to hijack an @EPAMichaelRegan event.
The City’s denial focused on RMG's track record of non-compliance on the SE side – including harassing health inspectors.
RMG must stand for ‘Regurgitate Mistruths Group.’
