This is an impressive work of art, but not for the reasons many believe.

Because its a pixelated image of a skull?

Because its on Bitcoin?

Because its Inscription #0?

Those reasons are related, but not the main reason why the art is great. The fact that it's a pixelated skull is not the important part of the art. There are millions of inscriptions on Bitcoin, many with interesting art. Inscriptions #652, #20219, #203112, and #-226 (yes, there are negative inscription numbers too) are related in that the visual art is not the main significance of the work. The art of all these works is exploring the medium of Bitcoin.

What's special about the skull is that the art of the skull is the Bitcoin Ordinals protocol itself. The art shows how three concepts are combined to enable digital artifacts on Bitcoin.

1. Ordinal Theory - the idea that individual satoshis (sats) can be tracked on Bitcoin.

2. The Inscription - the idea that a file, in this case, the png image of the skull, can be written onto the Bitcoin blockchain, recorded immutably and forever.

3. Ownership - the idea that inscriptions can be owned by mapping them to sats and taking advantage of the properties of the Bitcoin ledger.

The skull is just a cover image. The actual art by @rodarmor is under the covers, where you find the Ordinals protocol. The skull is the conceptual art of Ordinals, a protocol for digital artifacts on Bitcoin. That's why this is an impressive work of art.
