27 May: An 11-year-old girl and her 3-year-old brother went missing. They used to help their relatives in selling toys and balloons.
29 May: Two days after the children went missing, their father filed a missing report at Katakamdaag Police Station.
31 May: The 11-year-old girl's body was recovered from near a water reservoir located beside Sindur Panchayat Bhavan in the Kora Police Station area.
Monday (2 June): The body of the girl's 3-year-old younger brother was also recovered from the same place.
Wednesday (3 June): The Special Investigation Team (SIT) arrested the accused Sanjit Paswan when he was trying to escape.
According to Hazaribagh SP Aman Kumar, the accused was seen on CCTV footage with the girl on a scooter, on the basis of which his identity was identified. During questioning, he confessed to his crime.
The accused had been working at that showroom for the past two months where the girl used to sell toys and balloons with her brother. On the day of the incident, he took the children on the scooter on the pretext of feeding them and took them to a cremation ghat located near the Panchayat Bhavan. There he raped the girl and the accused, out of fear of being caught, strangled her to death and then also killed her younger brother.
The accused is from Sindur village. On his information, the police recovered the scooter and a plastic bag used in the crime from his house.
The victim Muslim family is originally from Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh and makes their living by selling toys and balloons in markets.
