To the young lawyers with newly established firms,
I want to share insights on the importance of specialization. From my experience, it can be challenging for a young lawyer engaged in general legal practice to find their niche. It often takes about five years of hard work across various areas before you truly find your footing.
During my early years, I defended murder cases in Nakuru, handled several robbery with violence cases in Nairobi, and worked with a few petty offenders. An advocate encouraged me to frequent Kibera and Makadara Law Courts to seek work, where we could earn up to Kshs. 20,000 per day, sharing our earnings with brokers, primarily policemen, who helped us secure cases.
Specialization typically begins when clients start to recognize your name. Many of you are already working tirelessly, often without influential connections or privileged backgrounds, yet you continue to strive for excellence against all odds. My advice is to push forward—strategically, resiliently, and confidently. When you take on a case, argue passionately and aim for results. Build a track record that clients will reference when recommending you to others.
Dress well, act, speak, and present yourself as a lawyer. Avoid bright colors like red or white suits; instead, opt for somber colors. If you use a boda boda, consider alighting some distance away from the law courts or meeting site, and walk in confidently- as if you own the world.
Remember, the little things matter—avoid using that simple blue or black bic pen in client meetings. Invest in a decent pen, tablet or yellow writing pads, and fresh breath mint spray. While you should be flexible on fees in the initial meeting, don't create the impression that you are a cheap lawyer. Be strategic. Get the client to pay the fees that you want. Here, the strategy is to charge full fees but via instalments.
Above all, maintain discipline and honesty at all times. From my experience, these qualities will lead to significant rewards.
