This was the scene on US 19 in Burnsville, NC late last week. Nearly two months after Hurricane Helene ripped through the western Carolinas, there is still an enormous amount of destruction. While recover is well underway, it’ll take years for many to fully rebuild.

In case you missed it, I announced Friday that we decided not to do a Pizza Party this year. As a station, we felt it would be best to be laser-focused on a single all-day fundraiser to specifically benefit those in the western Carolinas. This tragedy may have fallen out of the national news headlines, but there is still a tremendous need for monetary donations to rebuild and get those impacted through the winter and beyond.

So, I hope you'll join us at the Surfside Walmart (2751 Beaver Run Blvd) from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 21st, for our "Neighbors Helping Neighbors Day of Caring." Many from ABC-15 and the Salvation Army will be out there all day collecting your monetary donations. Stop by and say hello. We'll be selling bobbleheads there, too!

By the way, for those that can’t make it to the fundraiser we will have a QR code that you can use to donate directly to the cause.

Some will ask, "Why not do both?" Putting the Pizza Party together requires an enormous amount of work, which falls on me and our promotions manager, Jason Ashmawi. We simply don't have the time or resources to do both and believe the one-day fundraiser will bring in a larger amount of money that will benefit the western Carolinas.

WIth that said, we WILL do a Pizza Party next year and it WILL be the best and biggest one ever. IF we don't get hit, we celebrate. If we do, we'll use it to heal and help those impacted in our community.
