A hero being slowly tortured to death with the whole world watching. Hussam Abu Safiya was born in 1973 into a family displaced from the Palestinian village of Hamama and raised in Jabalia refugee camp. Not exactly a head start in life. To the manor born he was not...

Still, he went to Kazakhstan to study medicine, met his wife Albina there, and returned with her to Gaza in 1996. With his skills he could have made millions in private clinics in at least 50 different countries, but no, he chose to support his people and share their fate.

He became a pediatrician and neonatologist: a man who had chosen to spend his life keeping children alive.

By 2024 he was director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, one of the last barely functioning hospitals in northern Gaza. Under bombardment and with doctors disappearing through death, injury and detention, Abu Safiya refused to abandon his patients.

Israel took almost everything from him before it took him. On 25 October 2024, his 15-year-old son Ibrahim was killed in a drone strike at the hospital entrance. Abu Safiya buried his child in the hospital courtyard and went back to work.

A month later, Abu Safiya himself was wounded by drone-fired shrapnel. He went back to work again. On 27 December, after Israeli forces emptied Kamal Adwan Hospital, the world saw him walking alone through the ruins toward an Israeli tank. He was arrested.

More than eighteen months later, he remains imprisoned without formal charges; his lawyer and human-rights advocates say his health has severely deteriorated and allege physical and psychological abuse, while Israeli authorities deny mistreatment.

There are people who talk about courage because they have never had to demonstrate it. Abu Safiya buried his son, treated the wounded while injured himself, watched the hospital around him being destroyed and still refused to leave the sick behind. Israel has alleged Hamas ties; no formal charges have been filed against him.

Perhaps that is why the image of him walking toward the tank is so difficult to forget. The tank contained an army. The man walking toward it had already lost his son, his hospital and almost everything else that could be taken from him.

He still walked forward.

Now Israel is slowly but surely murdering him AND enjoying every step of the slow motion execution.

The current power structures benefit from propping up Israel, so not even millions of people watching a vicious execution can stop rabid dog Israel.

Israel's license to kill shows us who really has power in this world.

Hint: it's not those who want to see talented physicians do their job.

You cannot staff two hundred new mental health centres with magic dust and managerial jargon.

Pressed on BBC Breakfast about launching scores of walk-in hubs in banks, libraries, and hospitals without hiring extra staff, Yvette Cooper offered a familiar excuse: workers must simply "work differently".

This is not a strategy for public health. It is a masterclass in public relations. It is a government desperate to be seen doing something, precisely so it can avoid the hard work of actually doing something.

Ministers love photo opportunities. Cutting a ribbon outside a bank branch or a town library costs next to nothing. Training, recruiting, and paying the actual human beings required to care for vulnerable people requires real commitment.

Cooper boasts of a £16 billion mental health budget. But shuffling an exhausted NHS worker from a clinic to a desk in a municipal library does not create one extra minute of care. It merely stretches a burnt-out workforce across a larger map.

Rebranding overworked staff is cheap; providing genuine care is not. Until this government funds the people to run these facilities, these hubs are not a breakthrough: they are just empty rooms with a sign on the door. "We will fix you".
