At 54 deg sth latitude, Macquarie Island falls into the realm of the ‘furious fifties’ winds. With no land mass to buffer the strong westerly winds, the island is scoured and shaped by often unrelenting wind averaging 25km/hr, with gusts over to 185km/hr (~100 knots) recorded.
