In the summer of 1980, a distraught 7th grade boy stood in the courtyard of a modest house in Mylapore, watching his father toss his cricket bat down a deep well. A fast bouncer had shattered the boy's spectacles during a local match & his father, a renowned Sanskrit logician, was terrified for his son's sight.

"Your cricket days are done," his father declared, handing him a violin. "If you want to master precision, master this."

The boy did not throw a tantrum. He directed his focus toward the strings, training until he was performing alongside musical legends, even taking direct corrections from Bharat Ratna M.S. Subbulakshmi.

5 yrs later, he suffered another blow: he failed to clear the IIT-JEE examination.

He did not give up. He enrolled in a regional engineering college, quietly mastering computer science logic gates. He eventually worked his way into IIT Madras as a postgrad researcher, earned a PhD, joined as a prof & eventually became the Director of the very institute that had once turned him away.

By 2011, while the world was building consumer mobile apps, this prof was looking at a hidden national vulnerability: every radar, fighter jet, banking server & defense system in India was running on foreign-designed microprocessors.

He had a single question in his mind: "We can test that a foreign chip does what we WANT it to do. But can we guarantee it does not do something we DO NOT want it to do when a war starts?"

He proposed building a completely indigenous, industrial-grade microprocessor from scratch. Global tech giants insisted it could not be done w/o billions of dollars in infrastructure & massive foreign patents.

He did not care. Working out of cramped labs on long shifts, he & his team adopted the open source RISC-V instruction set. They hand-coded logic gates, mapped silicon layouts & verified billions of instruction cycles.

In July 2018, a tiny 16mm² piece of silicon codenamed Risecreek arrived back at the lab. The team wired it up, flipped the switch & watched a flickering monitor as the Linux operating system booted on 100% Indian-designed silicon for the 1st time in history.

Today, his SHAKTI processor architecture powers everything from defense communications to space grade controllers built in collaboration with ISRO.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), under the direction of the TVK Govt, had filed an FIR & conducted a raid yesterday at the residence and other premises associated with former DMK Minister Thiru E.V. Velu avl in connection with alleged irregularities in the execution of road contracts awarded in 2022.

I welcome the TVK Govt's efforts to investigate allegations of corruption from the previous DMK regime. I sincerely hope that the TVK Govt ensures a swift conclusion to these cases, and that anyone found guilty is held accountable in accordance with the law.

While we are on this subject, I urge the TVK Govt to look into the following scams that were exposed over the past 5 years, order an enquiry, and take action accordingly. Naming a few to begin with.

1.BGR Energy Scam – Flouting rules, re-awarding a contract, and later cancelling it after being exposed.
2.Nutrition Kit Scam – Procurement of Health Mix from private vendors at an inflated price despite Aavin coming forward to manufacture it.
3.Pongal Dhoti Scam – Use of excess polyester instead of cotton, and proofs of which were submitted to DVAC.
4.Multiple scams in the State Transport Department – Procurement of Reflective & Rear Marking Plates and much more.
5.TNMSC Scam – Procurement of Pesticides
6.MGNREGA Scam

We also hope the TVK Govt finds the time to solve a long-pending mystery. For years, we have been asking about the rather curious coincidence of Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin avl's fan club and Noble Steels operating from the very same address, and about Noble Steels' announcement of a ₹1,000 crore investment in Tamil Nadu soon after former Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin's visit to Dubai (that investment remains an announcement, is a topic for another day).

Ok, so here is my take on the Fable ban, sovereign AI, Sarvam, etc.

The event is interesting as it has implications from many perspectives.

For AI users, it is clear that you should not confuse access with ownership, or adoption itself as advantage. And if the most significant tech differentiator you are leveraging has external control loops, then you have to accept you are vulnerable.

For AI talent, it is now a precedent that you would be *seen* aligning to national interests more than company interests. And even if its just a whim for now, this trend will be hard to reverse as the world gets more automated…

For AI labs, their offerings will be stratified - general purpose AI would be available as utility, but frontier AI would be gated. This is a fantastic business model for labs - *democratized* AI sucks in all the data liquidity of the world which is locked in higher margin frontier offerings.

I think for the world to be a better place, all three of the above are bad vectors. We need to have more countries and companies owning their own destinies. And in the post AI world, that means being able to use and improve AI systems within their own perimeters - what one may call Sovereign AI.

From what I see, #Annamalai Anna, as a Tamil Nadu BJP leader, received national attention like no other.
He amassed a huge following and gained visibility that most state-level politicians can only dream of. But did he get all of that simply because he was a BJP candidate?
The simple answer is: No.
BJP chose him because he had the qualities they were looking for: outstanding qualifications, a clean image, an aggressive political style, and a proven track record as an IPS officer who connected strongly with the masses, especially the younger generation.
He had the calibre. BJP gave him the platform.
In turn, he rose to national prominence because the Modi and Amit Shah leadership identified his potential and gave him opportunities that very few state leaders receive.
Yes, he did not win his seat in 2024.
But after BJP’s strategic realignment with AIADMK, we did not exactly win either.
So when some BJP voices, or presumed BJP voices, mock Annamalai as a “loser candidate who couldn’t even win his own seat,” they are not just attacking him. They are also questioning the judgment of the leadership that identified, promoted, and invested in him.
One can support Modi ji and Amit Shah ji, and still support Annamalai Anna too. I certainly do.
One can also disagree with Modi ji and Amit Shah ji without resorting to abuse, questioning their intentions, or turning every political disagreement into a North versus South issue.
This is not a war between North and South. It is not a war between Hindi speakers and Tamil speakers. It is simply a disagreement over political strategy.
At the end of the day, Modi ji, Amit Shah ji, and Annamalai Anna all want the same thing: a stronger and more prosperous India.
Feel free to disagree with any of them.
Just don’t pit one against the other.
