It was just before dawn. Hyderabad city hadn’t fully woken up yet. At Begum Bazar’s Jinsi Chauraha, what looked like an ordinary morning turned into a moment of raw courage.

On March 4, Manju Omlata stepped out for a morning walk with her daughter-in-law. As they reached near Hindi Marwadi Vidyalaya, a rowdy-sheeter from Dabirpura, Mohammed Sohel, suddenly lunged at her, trying to snatch the gold chain from her neck.

In the struggle, his scooter lost balance and fell. The victim screamed for help.

A few meters away, an auto driver, Mohammed Zaheer, had already crossed the spot. But something in his side mirror caught his attention. He had moved nearly 100 meters ahead.

He didn’t think twice.

Zaheer immediately turned his auto around and sped back.

As the accused tried to escape, Zaheer rammed his auto into the bike, knocking him down. The rowdy-sheeter picked up a stick and attacked. Zaheer didn’t back off. He stood his ground, fought back, and stopped him from fleeing.

By then, patrolling police reached the spot and took the accused into custody.

And Zaheer?

He quietly left. No noise. No claim. No reward expected.

Later, the victim informed the Goshamahal police about the unknown auto driver who stepped in when it mattered.

CCTV cameras had captured everything. The chase. The impact. The fight.

Police traced the auto number from the footage and, using technical inputs, identified Zaheer.

On Tuesday, at the TGICCC in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad City Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar invited Zaheer to his chamber.

He was honoured with a cash reward and a commendation certificate.

CP VC Sajjanar called him what most people only talk about - a real role model.

In a time when many look away, Zaheer chose to act. He risked his life for a stranger. Asked for nothing in return.

The accused, Mohammed Sohel, has been arrested by Goshamahal Police. He is a known rowdy-sheeter with 16 cases across police stations.

अगर सीलिंग दस फ़ीट से ज़्यादा है, तो बधाई हो…! आपका क़द दुनिया में ऊँचा हो चुका है। अगर घर में बालकनी है तो बस आप क़िला फ़तेह करने ही वाले हैं.

और अगर आपकी खिड़की से एक किलोमीटर दूर भी समन्दर दिखता है, तो आपको क्या टेंशन है ? सो जाइए। आप तो सी फ़ेसिंग में रहते हैं महाराज, अगला घर वर्ली-बांद्रा में लेने की सोच रहे हैं या अलीबाग में बंगला बनवाएँगे?

पिछले दिनों की बात है। एक ब्रोकर ने मेरे राइटर दोस्त को घर दिखाते हुआ कहा, “साहेब इस घर में धूप भी आती है…।”

मैनें मजाक किया, “अकेले आती है कि ब्वायफ्रेंड के साथ ?

ब्रोकर हँसने लगा… “मजाक नहीं सर, धूप आती है तभी वन बीएचके का किराया इकतीस हज़ार है और डिपाजिट डेढ़ लाख है.”

घर लेने गया मेरा लेखक दोस्त, जो उस समय “सोनम की सुहागरात” नामक साइंस फ़िक्शन फ़िल्म एक नए प्रोड्यूसर को बेचने के बाद पनवेल में फ़ार्म हाउस बनवाने के सपने देख रहा था, उसने कहा, “भैया ये थोड़ा ज़्यादा ही बड़ा घर हो गया. साइज छोटा करिए न. शादी भी नहीं हुई हैं, रात को अकेले डर लगता है. “

मैं हँसने लगा… और दोस्त की भावना का अनुवाद किया. जिसका भावार्थ ये था कि भैया ये डार्क कहानी लिखने वाला राइटर है, इसको धूप से एलर्जी हैं. इसकी स्किन को म्हाडा वाले अंधकारमयी घर ही शूट करते हैं. पच्चीस हजार तक में दिखाइए.”

बहरहाल. मजाक से इतर…

पिछले एक साल से जब भी मुंबई से बलिया जाता हूँ, ये किस्सा याद आ जाता है। तीस पर मेरी माँ नीचे से चिल्लाती है, “दिन भर छतवा पर का करेला हो ?”

अब माँ को कैसे समझाऊँ कि माँ तुम्हारे छत पर जो है. वो इस देश के करोड़ों लोगों को बड़े नसीब से मिलता है..थोड़ा छत पर खड़े हो लेने दो. निहार लेने दो इस चढ़ते चैत को.

देखो न, सारे पंत, निराला मेरे सामने नाँच रहे हैं. किट्स और मिल्टन कविताएँ लिखने बैठे हैं. जरा सा रुको. क्या ये छपरा जाने वाली छह बजिया सिटी बजा रही है ? तब तो केदारनाथ सिंह मांझी के पुल पर बैठकर लिख रहे होंगे.

“मेरी बस्ती के लोग सिर्फ़ इतना जानते हैं
कि दुपहर की धूप में
जब किसी के पास कोई काम नहीं होता
तो पके हुए ज्वार के खेत की तरह लगता है
माँझी का पुल”

लेकिन जानता हूँ कि माँ नहीं देख सकती माँझी के पुल को, पके हुए ज्वार के खेत की तरह..सोचता हूँ कि ये सब कहने से भी क्या ही फ़ायदा. माँ को इसका महत्व कभी समझ नहीं आएगा. बहुतों को समझ नहीं आता.

आदमी का स्वभाव ही अजीब है. जब तक किसी चीज का अभाव न हो आदमी उसके महत्व को स्वीकार नहीं कर पाता.

लेकिन मुझे समझ आ गया है कि आज आपको साफ़ हवा, आसमान और खेत नसीब है, तो बधाई हो प्रभु…. आप एक लग्ज़री लाइफ़ जी रहे हैं. 😄
