How do lizards talk? Using flashy colours and sexy moves, of course. But why have so many signals - especially when they're costly and attract predators? We explore the how and why in our latest paper:

Also, multiple steroid hormone levels were associated with the degree of signal expressions. These results highlight how multi-component, dynamic signals are maintained, from both functional and mechanistic perspective.

Director of an IIT. Why is Himachal having landslides? Because of unplanned construction/deforestation/climate change/all of the above? No. Because of meat-eating.
Is he saying farming animals leads to deforestation? No. He says it leads to cloudbursts.

Imagine being an octopus, casually chilling & camouflaging on a reef 🪸 This is what we call “primary defense”, or more casually, “the art of not getting noticed.”
In this case, your superpower is “crypsis,” or background matching. You, as the octopus, have the EPIC ability to analyze your surroundings and alter your skin texture and color to match. Rock, coral, sand? No worries! You got this. …So you’re just lying low, hoping nobody bothers you (as usual) 🫥
But then, uh-oh! A human shows up and approaches you. It’s as if you’ve been caught sneaking into the kitchen for a midnight snack. 😅🍪 So now what? … Well, your “primary defense” didn’t work, so it’s time to switch to “secondary defense,” the “fight or flight” response.
In this scenario, you decide to put on one heck of a show! With a change in body pattern, you engage in “deimatic behaviour [dye-uh-mat-ik],” kinda like revealing a mask with two huge, menacing eyes! That’s exactly what our octo does. It dramatically changes its colors, creating a high contrast pattern called ‘conflict mottling’, puffs its arms out to reveal its TV screen-like webbing, and then reveals two big false eye spots. kinda like the octo is flashing a giant 👻 BOO!” sign to its approacher.
the point is…it’s unexpected, it’s startling, and it works— sometimes. 😅 Deimatic behavior is part of an impressive performance to startle predators & make them believe the octo isn’t worth the effort…
The predator might think— “Well dang, Is this a bigger, more dangerous creature than I thought?!” While the octopus is buying time and analyzing the threat— the video ends!
What might have happened next?
After camouflage and bluffing defenses comes protean behavior, or the “going nuclear” option…otherwise known as the “Blanch– Ink–Jet maneuver” where octopus blanch white or dark & erratically jet away in a confusing cloud of ink. In this underwater game of cat and mouse, it’s all about being smart, quick, and unpredictable!
If ya read this far, comment ‘Deimatic’ & ermm Re-X this to your stories to pass on the knowledge!!! 🐙🥰
